Or as above says.
Feed, brush, pat and if you don't mind spending some time walking, leading the horse around builds bonding fast too.
ps...gold bond can help you with your issue 😆
But mostly, the answer is "Bonding":

Overall, you MUST get a Horse to a level 4 bond. Otherwise it's just not a good horse at all, yet.
Why would you do that? Just shoot them in the head with Improved Arrow; one shot, one kill, no damage. As long as you shoot the animal in the highlighted red area with this arrow. Enter dead-eye in order to get the shot.
Only time this arrow is overpowering and can damage is when outside that red area. Or if the animal is small; like a rabbit or coyote for example.
Because when you hit it anywhere you will have the kill, and the pelt won't be screwed, a nice tip especially for beginners who's aim isn't that good..
Also newbs don't seem to understand that once you have a recipe pamphlet, you have to open it and click READ. Otherwise it doesn't count as "learned"
Well same with a Bear, Panther, Cougar... if it gets too close the Horse going to buck you off no matter what horse or level of bonding. I keep the mino-map radar on Expanded. Pay attention to it for red dots. If the red dot shows very near your horse and you don't see anything quickly then it's a snake
