As for smaller pelts like deer, with the proper horse gear I think the max is 5. But don't quote me. :)
I am using that one popular spreadsheet on reddit that shows the animals and for deer they categorized it as large and I would store multiple deer pelts on my horse...is the spreadsheet wrong?
medium - more than 10 - unknown
small - 99, each animal. in a fully upgraded satchel

I never saw an end, never reached a limit - except I ran out of 3 star pronghorns and the Perfect Buck Cherry on top maxed out the carcass load, but it was supposed to be a Perfect Pronghorn Buck - had trouble finding one of those this time...
Took all this and the associated meats, horns, teeth, hearts, etc. to St. Denis.
$210
Everything taken with a Bow/Regular Arrows in the big blue meadow South of Hanging Dog. I did get one extra poor Cougar outside Beechers - dropped that pelt. The Trapper got the 2 perfect Cougars <---been eyeing a vest that's not too hateful. The Butcher around the corner got everything else.
I'll bet I can put 99 medium pelts on the horse.
I don't see myself testing that theory.
That was a LOT of hunting.
Hilarious Tidbit:
There were also 4 poor wolves. They were chasing a guy on a horse and he got surrounded. I peeled 2 off my side, he turned toward me and trampled me down like a dog - I got up and took the other 2 before they ate me. No thank you, get out of the way or kiss my ass - he just rode off... that's gratitude for ya...lol
Wait, you hunted all that and you only got $210 from it? I am still new to the game but that seems like a lot of work for very little pay
When it comes to the large pelts, you can store one on horseback but you can also carry one on foot, while one is on your horse, and walk them both in. Or you can carry one large pelt on your horse and then rope a carcass (from horseback) and drag it in (dragging doesn't damage the pelt for some reason) but that depends on the size, you can't rope and drag a grizzly for example.
It took a couple of hours - I paused the clock just after dark. I was picking herbs on foot and encountering the various critters I put on the horse. I walked from one end to the other in the big valley there. Then turned and came back. It all had respawned except the plants.
$200 bucks in couple of hours isn't bad, but fishing and selling tonics is more lucrative. Much more.
A single Steelhead/Sockeye brings $5.31 at St. Denis. I know where I can catch 'em in rapid fire. A single Potent Snake Oil is about $2.50 I think. It takes a single Indian Tobacco. Potent Horse Simulant is $2.75, takes 2 easy to find and gather plants.
That hunting trip made $200 - and I picked enough plants while doing it to brew $400 worth of tonics. You can sell tonics - Potent, not Special - at the Doctor or General Store.
You can fish and brew tonics until you get a load, then cash those in for an easy thousand, pretty much at your leisure. You do have to pick herbs, get bit by snakes, fish, hunt and walk a lot. It's not a bad job if it wasn't for the snakes.
Try to make a little money all the time. It all adds up and it's not like we have anything else to do. I'm not in a hurry.
I hunt to feed the camp and myself. For me, I'll go get 99 big game from poor gators in about 40 minutes. I'll keep 50 to cook and give the rest to Pearson. On the way back in I'll grab a perfect animal and give him that as well. I keep camp stores in the gold.
I was curious myself how many medium pelts can stack. I guess the answer is - plenty. I hunt a lot and have never hit the limit.
The question was: How many pelts can you get on the horse.
The answer is: Plenty - but I don't really know how many.
I never got to a limit and had more than 20 on the horse.
Hunting is a lot of work - for not much pay. <---but everyone needs to eat.
Fishing is less work - for more pay - and you don't need to involve the horse to carry them.
I suppose you could feed the camp on fish, but it's easier feeding them with meat - and fish can be sold for good money - meat can't.
The big money goes in the satchel, not on the horse. The easiest fish with the best payouts go in the satchel.
Plants go in the satchel.
The Tonics you brew go in the satchel.
Life and growing your cash-flow (if you want to) is easier AFTER you upgrade the satchel.
Many people would rather eat 5 cans of potted meat (when they can only carry 3) to get their Dead Eye Core about half full. On the other hand I'd rather eat 1 Thyme Big Game to FILL my Dead Eye Core, and make it GOLD for a full day. You can't do that without hunting meat.
If people spent more time looking around them to see what's there - and less time sprinting their Arabian past it - they could make more money - if they wanted to...lol
Unfortunately you have to go online - and that's right out.
