Yes, I can see this is going to be a lonnnng process. You gotta get rank 10 in that to get the wagon, and leaving it up to me to find the best game, ha... well, that don't seem the best bet. I wonder if it would be worth it to join the Naturalist role. I know that sends you to where the good game is and the legendary animals, I suppose I could follow that role and just take some of that stuff back to Cripps...
But you could park your camp in some animal filled spot and just kill anything you find for now. Put one animal on a horse, can stow couple smaller ones on sides. Drag one with lasso. Hunting wagon is good stuff too later on.
For a successful hunting run I suggest shooting 2 medium animals to store on the side of the saddle, 1 big animal on the back and dragging 1 big animal with your lasso.
To get 3-star carcasses, use the appropriate weapon, e.g. rifles for big and huge animals, repeaters for medium animals and varmint rifle for small animals.
Also, shoot the head or another of the special areas (visible in red in Eagle Eye).
Note:
There are 2 types of medium sized animals.
Bigger ones likes coyotes or foxes (stored on the back), and smaller ones like rabbits, turkeys or raccoons (stored on the side).
One of the trader role upgrades gives an extra bonus for 3-star carcasses, at which point you can easily fill the materials bar with 4 or 5 deer or pronghorns.
Another unlock is the hunting wagon which can hold 5 big carcasses, so that's a no brainer for hunting then.
The hunting wagon also permanently stores everything you put in until you sell it, even if it gets destroyed or you dismiss it.
Drop your camp in The Great Plains and be constantly surrounded by good game. They are always spawning. You can place one dead deer on your horse + 2 small things (rabbit/turkey/etc) and drag a 2nd dead deer behind you with a lasso. If you have friends they can also turn in stuff for you.
Me and 2 friends can fill up from nothing to full in about five minutes doing this.
Then when it's full go do other stuff.
Bounty hunts, moonshine, naturalist, etc until Crips needs a resupply.
Pick up pelts while doing other missions and store them on your horse to turn in as well to make it faster. You can even store a couple rabbits/turkeys/etc on the sides.
Once you get better in the role you can make around $600+ per delivery of goods. It's the best role in the game for making money.
I can not recommend naturalist though. If you kill any animals Harriet will hate you and refuse to talk to you for an hour. It's impossible to do trader and naturalist at the same time because of this. The money is also very bad. $30 per mission if you are lucky and if you want to make a coat out of the legendary pelts you are looking at spending $500-$1000.
You are better picking up bounty hunting for money + gold.
I hope this helps.
No you don't get 700 every 20 minutes on trader role. That is some total ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ if I've ever smelled it. Cripps produces 1 good to sell every 2 minutes or so.
I like Tall Trees area'ish. There is a cougar, a moose at the lake, a couple of legendaries nearby, etc. Great spot.
correction long distance is $625, (double checked myself) as for timing ran a 100 goods run filled supply and sat around took 31 minutes to fill cart.
