2021: Vulkan or DirectX 12??
I would like your help in figuring out which API is better to run Red Dead Redemption 2. The game looks identical regardless of API, but I am concerned about best performance.
So, what API do you think is more appropriate to run Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC: Vulkan, or DirectX 12?

My basic PC specs:
  • Windows 10 Pro, 64 bits, version 20H2
  • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9700K CPU @ 3.60GHz
  • Geforce RTX 2080 SUPER, driver version 461.09
  • Memory RAM DDR4, 16 GB

AMD RX 6800 XT graphics card, game has way more stability on vulkin but doesnt look as nice, even with the same settings, as for FPS i dont know i keep FPS for all games capped at 55 and both hit and keep my cap consistently. But, DX12 crashes, freezes and tears ALOT, dont have those issues with Vulkan.

I experienced freezes with Vulkan so I switched to DX12, no problems since. 3060ti

Vulkan is trash. DX12

yeah think its a try it and find out because results seem very inconsistent

I found Vulkan to give higher fps on my 3080, 5900X and 64gb Ram PC, it did on my 1070, R5 3600 and 32gb Ram PC and on my sister's 2070S, R5 3600 and 32gb Ram PC. However Vulkan I see has some graphical glitches like artifacts and flickering occasionally, I don't have crashes on either though, but i'd rather the extra few frames from Vulkan.

I'm not sure if DX12 does, but every 20 minutes or so I get a random stutter on Vulkan which is no big deal, going to 64gb Ram from 32gb for some reason reduced that despite me never having more than 16gb used at any given time while playing

I get micro stutters with vulkan on my RTX 3070, so I'm only using dx12. However, I did notice some graphical artifacts on dx12 that were not present in vulkan. Does anyone else have this issue?

I used DX12 when I started playing and had some graphical artifacts so switched to Vulkan and was good. But the last couple months have had the microstutters. Finally switched back to DX12 a few days ago and all is good so far. Fingers crossed.

If you're using MSAA turn it off. There is a programming error in the engine that can lead to microstutters

Vulkan for Nvidia GPUs.
DX12 for AMD GPUs.

Vulkan breaks steam overlay for me completely

I've no idea what's going on with the graphics of this game other than knowing that after 1300 hours of uninterrupted play I've now been required to turn my graphics consumption down by fifty or sixty MB or receive low memory warnings after the last "update" that for me is a downgrade.

Hopefully the next new driver will sort it out.

Vulkan definitely. I used to have occasional ctds when using dx12 as well as microstutters. Vulkan is the cure, no more ctds and no more stuttering.

Vulkan is hipster nonsense. Stick with DX. It's a mature graphics library, and as long as your PC isn't riddled with pron malware like these morons, it'll work great

It's not a programming error, it's more because of the way the RAGE engine works. When they first released GTA IV, a common feature that was missing was MSAA. but that's because hardware of the time already had a high degree of difficulty handling this engine as it was; let alone with the very hefty performance cost that using multisampling with a deferred rendering engine brings.

How do we fix the micro-stuttering?
