Custom outfits on horse keep getting overwritten
If I switch to a default outfit on my horse, it will overwrites my custom outfits saved to my horse to that set of clothes effectively making me stuck in those clothes until I get to a wardrobe.

What is a Default Outfit?

It is EASY to build a custom outfit, put it on the horse and not save it. Too Easy. Pay close attention to the icons, text and screen prompts when in the Wardrobe. Make sure the Custom Outfits on the horse, are actually saved Custom Outfits.

You can have 5 Outfits on the Horse (with the upgraded Saddle Bags). Any combination of Crafted/Purchased/Custom - but only 5. If your Custom Outfit doesn't have a Bandanna, when you put on the Bandana out in the world, you've created a new Custom Outfit. Reload the same outfit after the crime and you Delete the Custom Outfit automatically. Then you should load a new outfit - so you won't be recognized, of course.

Another Wardrobe 'Bug':
If you're in the wardrobe and equip an outfit, the outfit you were wearing vanishes from the horse. Be sure to put it back on the horse, but don't worry - when you've done it 50 times, you'll remember.

If you're in Chapter 3 - a bug caused by "The Badge", of all things may vanish your Custom Outfits (it gets some or all of mine every time). Re-create your Custom Outfits and it should be OK after that, but that dumb Badge will appear and disappear until late in Chapter 3, then it goes away on it's own without further incident, wardrobe wise.

It's really annoying, 'cause you make some great outfits that show off and complement The Badge - then the dam thing doesn't show up...lol

Pro Tip:
After hunting, you're soaked in Blood - even though you may not see it. NPCs will see it and comment on your appearance. After Hunting, or fighting, or battling, or being thrown to the ground from your Arabian - load up the outfit again - to get a fresh one. Always look your best.

;)

About blood; even if you change clothes and you look clean, NPCs will still say that you are covered in blood until you bathe.

No, it's definitely a bug. I just found out was causes it. When you switch outfits on a horse, there is an option called "custom outfit" and if you select it, it will basically delete one of the outfits from your horse loadout. I don't know why this feature was added because it servers no purpose other than to break your loadouts.

It turns out it doesn't actually overwrite them, but just basically replaces it on your horse. When you select custom outfit by accident, it basically says "okay, we already have 3/3 outfit slots taken, replace outfit 1 with current outfit, but because you already have that exact same outfit on. It just basically deletes it from the horse loadout. This is pretty annoying because it's too easy to accidentally select this.

Default outfits, as in, outfits that exist to you by default. Non-custom outfits. Turns out that's not the issue by itself.

Well... see... when I create a custom outfit by wearing my bandana - I don't WANT to save that outfit 'cause it covers up my Roscoe Klein Necktie - so naturally I don't load the NEW Custom Outfit - I load the old Custom Outfit that doesn't have the bandana around my neck, covering up my necktie...

But if you have a sequence of events that's working for you - do that.

You may want to upgrade your satchel, and your saddle bags before you turn Public Enemy #1. You'll live longer between death scenes if you can carry more outfits and soothing tinctures.

Interesting... I don't get how some people refer to the game controls as easy. after 100 plus hours in this game I still can't use the saved outfits option... The game says I have 3 saved outfits filled on my horse, but I only have one, so I basically have to play as super warm or super cold until I can go to camp and change clothes.

Clicking on a clothing piece in your inventory to take it on and off, with an immediate readout of warmth, like I do in skyrim.. that is easy, this is torture.

I just explained in excruciating detail how it works. Every time you equip a bandana you create a custom outfit. If you load that Custom Outfit, it deletes your old custom outfit. Takes it right off the horse too.

There's a mod wherein you can 'Name' your Custom Outfits and have 200 of them, if you want, but I don't trust it not to break my game. Instead, I learned how to manipulate the available functions so they bend to my will.
Luminary Jan 29, 2022 @ 8:17am
Yes, I also found out how to manipulate the available game functions, which makes the game more annoying and less enjoyable. It's OK for players to be annoyed at the fact that RS could have created an easier and less annoying method for managing inventory, but didn't.

But yes I can still play =)

Another way is to just save one outfit to your horse (like a cold one "grizzlie outlaw") and when needed use the camping function to setup a camp and then fast travel back to the main story camp to change outfits. The only bummer that is that you may have to do more long horse rides.
JuiceWSA Jan 29, 2022 @ 8:58am
Yes, I can see how convenient that is - Don't know why I didn't think of it.
Pyx Jan 29, 2022 @ 4:54pm
I run a custom summer and custom winter outfit. I have copies of them with the hats swapped out. If I get an outfit overwritten I can just swap to the 2nd copy and change the hat. Buying clothes and things often screws up my outfits and this lets me deal with the issue from my horse. Just be sure to keep the correct hats on your horse as well.

Since there isn't hardly anything to do in this game (:steammocking:), I like making outfits for all weather situations - and to fit my mood.

Most of the Trapper Garments are ridiculous, but there are a few items that can be put together in Cold Weather Gear. "The Stalker" isn't bad, and has the benefit of not being too warm when you come off the mountain... not so with this little number:

Everyone needs a Crime Outfit - or something to wear in the rain:

The 'Work Clothes' fill many situations - many of them resulting in No Hat. There we go:

This week's Town Rig is darker than usual. It's been below freezing for many days here in the real world. I feel a little dark:

I usually carry 4 Custom Outfits, then toss in a purchased, or crafted outfit that doesn't suck too bad. I just got "The Tumbleweed" and that's in the bags this week. Not in love with the hat, but it'll do.

I have a main outfit that I just made 3 variations of. It's a modified version of the grizzlies outlaw outfit. The cold uses the coat and gloves, the fair just removes gloves, and hot removes coat and gloves.

Better check that one - The Coat isn't Cold Weather Gear.
In fact, the ONLY Default Cold Weather Coat you have is The Denim Coat in the Winter Gunslinger.

With a Few Trapper Articles, in this test it took the Bear Shotgun Chaps, the Huntsman Vest, and a pair of Legendary Cougar Gloves to get that outfit into Cold Weather:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2736926644

Out of the box, The Grizzly's Outlaw is good for 'Average Temps' - a range from about 60 down to 30. If it's below 30 - you'll eventually freeze to death. It does 'Look' Warm, but it's not - apparently.

Almost every Trapper Item is Cold Weather Rated 'cause it's made out of an animal skin with the hair on it. PETA be dammed - that stuff is warm... sometimes too warm.

It's suitable for cold weather. In case you didn't know, based on the language "slightly warm, warm, and very warm" you can determine the amount of points something has. Because of the way I have it set up, adding gloves makes it cold weather suitable, while removing them makes it average temp suitable. Removing the coat and gloves makes it hot weather suitable. I know what I'm doing.

The fact of the matter is that the outfit saving system is designed by a monkey. It keeps taking outfits from my horse and remove custom ones when making new outfits. Just take the system from gta online ffs.
