Do I have to re-install, or can I just clear all of the foreign files in my directory?
By "foreign files" I mean mods.

Kind'a depends on the mod. Many mod authors will state in the mod description whether it's OKAY to uninstall their mod in the middle of a game. On the other hand some don't. Kind of a roll of the dice IMO. Sometimes you roll snake eyes, sometime a 7.

I was asking if I had to wipe my files and re-install instead of clearing all modded files.

Just remove the extra files.

You may also have three additional ffx_fsr2_api files, if so keep them as they're needed.

That's what I answered. But just to be clear no you don't have to delete all your "foreign files". You just have to delete the ones where the creators say it is OKAY to do it. [begin sarcasm]Of course you can take that drastic step and delete all your RDR2 mods if you want to. You'll have to start a new game in all probability but what ever floats your boat. Oh and just to be safe why not delete all your mods, uninstall RDR2, reformat the drive it is on. Reinstall RDR2, verify files, defrag the HDD RDR2 is on or just optimize it if its on SSD or even better to be really really thourough just toss your current PC out the window, buy a new one and start fresh. AHHHH! forgot to mention if you reformat your drive you'll have to also reinstall all your steam games on it. Yeah. That's the ticket. do all of that.[/sarcasm]

The thing is, I don't 100% know if any mods install extra files after I run the game. I also don't feel like finding and re-downloading my 50+ mods and figuring out which files to delete. I might just reinstall

Of course it depends on how certain mods have been installed, but under 'normal' circumstances those mods are either in lml folder or in rdr2 root directory as .asi files
(and corresponding .ini, .log, .dll files)

And then there's the scripthook.dll and the asiloader.dll's (if you use any) and maybe a mod-manager too, you should know, if you use any and better look them up for how to remove them properly, if you are not sure about.

I guess you know, having installed 50+ mods like you mentioned, if there are any 'special' modifications or just 'normal' mods and what scriphook and asiloader those might need.

You could move all those .asi files (and corresponding .ini or/and .log files, depending on the modifications) and the whole lml folder to another location, that should remove them from the game. Moving them back and the game is modded again.

BUT then loading a save, where mods have been active, could cause those save(s) to not work anymore, again depending on the mods you used and how they change the game.

What exactly do you have in mind, if I might ask? A clean install for online-gaming?

I just wanted to work with a clean slate because some of my mods interfered with others. I wasn't able to identify the issues and just wanted to wipe everything. I don't know if there are .ddl, .log, .ini, or .asi files that are required for the base game.

You use the picture above to compare to your folder.
If the files in your folder are not in the picture - remove them.
If the folders in your game folder are not in the picture - remove them.

If you wanted to 'not' compare the files in the root - you could turn on file extensions and simply delete any and everything that is NOT a .rpf file, AND is NOT a folder.
(compare the folders, with picture).

After taking the approach of either paragraph, and removing files.....
You verify your game files via steam and it will correct any mistakes.

I removed everything with .asi, .dll, .log, and .ini and verified the integrity of the local files. Everything should be clear.
