use your EYE skill, you see a golden/yellow particle stream going upwards from the location! that is if your close ehnuff to it.

just asking: you did activate the map otherwise the chest wil not spawn.
i activated the map, and the Eye skill hasnt really helped at all

the eye does not help because your not close egnuff,

use this link to find out where the chest is https://jeanropke.github.io/RDR2CollectorsMap/
you can also use that site / map to find collectors items.

For the PC online, you must be within the yellow area. Use your eye and look for faint wisp of smoke coming off of your character. Follow the direction that smoke is going.

Every treasure map chest location has 4 possible spawn points.

For example, if you open a Brandywine Drop treasure map, the spawn points can be under the waterfall, on the right side of the waterfall behind some rocks, at the top of the waterfall on a ledge, or on the left side on a small plateau.

After a while you know all the spots for treasure locations.

Click the white arrow on the top left.
In the menu you an enable an overlay for all treasure map areas including the four possible exact locations.

Eh.......you're right the "smoke" coming off you is your smell. Follow that and you will be chasing your tail.

Are you talking about an actual treasure map or a collector map from Madam Nazar?

Beats the hell out of me. Im new at this and could not find a treasure. I followed that trail and it led me right to it. Must be coincidence.

Generally what indicates where the treasure is is what looks like smoke coming off of it filled with golden sparkles.

The golden sparkles can be blocked by rock. For example, a cave contains the treasure at one place and all you have to go on is the vibration of the gamepad when you are standing on the rock above the cave...you can't see it and that had me fooled until I wandered around and found the mouth of the cave. There is another location where the treasure is in a crevice on a rock face. Again, you can't see the sparkles and have to work you way on narrow ledges of rock to get to where you need to be, the vibration being your guide. Most of the spots are far easier, but the top of rock formations seems to be a favorite with the designers.

Found two empty chests, so far. The one on the top and the one on the east side, hidden in some rocks. The left side, is that west side? And under, is that the bottom? I´m going mad combing this area and your tip has worked for me twice I think.

Do people even use youtube these days? Every treasure map is on youtube. You don't even have to open and watch the full video either. Just make your way to each of the red x's and when you get close look around or use your binoculars.

Here is but one example for Brandywine drop map. Notice the four red x's, just make your way to their approximate locations and do your thang.

Alternatively there's always the RDO interactive map, which I personally prefer to YouTube videos.
