Go to sound settings, at the very bottom of the page is "advanced sound options" and within there is the "app volume and device preferences". Click on that and all your apps that use sound should pop up (make sure red dead 2 is open). The latest update turned down my audio for RDR2 down to 7 and I boosted it back up to 100 and now it sounds fine.

Probably check your volume mixer by right clicking the volume icon on the taskbar. The game might've lowered its own volume somehow. Make sure as well it's not just a brain fart and your volume is at a decent level.

Try using stereo in the realtek HD audio manager.

It was pretty quiet on my headphones when they were connected directly to my laptop but then I hooked up some speakers and plugged the headphones into the speakers so it serves as sort of an amplifier and I turned it up that way.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help but I requested a refund. the game has too many issues like the sound problem and controls.

too bad, I like the setting but it is not worth to deal with the problems the game has.

I have this same exact headset. Make sure the little wheel halfway down the cord next to the mute button is turned all the way up. I have this happen a few times, windows volume all the way up but I couldn't hear anything. It was cause that little wheel had turned down the volume.

I know the issue, it is easy to accidentaly turn the volume down. But the volume regulator was not the problem, it was caused by the game since all other games and programms worked well.

Great, just found another possible fix for my sound issues.

changing the settings from

<API>kSettingAPI_Vulkan</API>
to
<API>kSettingAPI_DX12</API>

and

<asyncComputeEnabled value="false" />
to
<asyncComputeEnabled value="true" />

could maybe have helped to fix the issues.

But I already refunded the game and now I am not sure if a second refund would be accepted by Steam if I rebuy the game and changing the setting will not work.

Lmao, same happened to me. Thanks for solution man

It's definitely got something to do with the update, which as far as I can tell is really only for online play... which I don't do. So this is very frustrating that an update for something I don't use has effected my single player mode.

Devs, something has happened to the sound volume with the latest update!!!
Rom!nou Dec 2, 2020 @ 2:35am
The solution is not permanent, I have to set the volume to 100 everytime I launch the game (since the update).
However the sound reset to 8 instead of 100 automatically.
jochen.duehmig Dec 2, 2020 @ 2:36am
Yeah same here. And the game crashes after 10-15 minutes.... All after the last update. WTF?
cygnusx1 Dec 2, 2020 @ 2:38am
I went into my Windows config to check the volume level. All were at 100. Still, when I went back into the game, I can barely hear a sound.

I even went into the game setting to see the audio. It's all maxed out!!!

?????
