Annoying ending
Honestly, I've only so far read about the end of Arthur Morgan but I feel it's another example of unnecessary character murder that plaques modern interactive media and movies... It's as if it was somehow more realistic and enjoyable to conclude the story in which the protagonist ends up dead for whatever reason and it just plainly sucks in my opinion.

Otherwise a fantastic game gets ruined by a unnecessary dramatic finale for the character and leaves a sour taste on mouth as if real world consequences were so fun why would we engage into escapism in the video games in the first place. Maybe the justification for making such story is that "times were changing", "Arthur was a bad man running out of time", or "Tuberculosis claimed good and bad alike those days"... or something along the line but honestly I'm personally sick and tired of having all the interesting characters get killed for no merit to the actual story except "well, the story has to end sometime", it doesn't mean the character would live forever if they had a happy ending but rather I honestly would personally rather see good endings to good stories instead of this "world is murky pond of eventuality that everyone has to face one day".

I doubt anyone thinks such endings are deep or meaningful as it's literally happening to everyone eventually and it isn't even pleasing as the character we've cherished and enjoyed following the exploits, developments, interactions with characters and etc. suddenly kicks the bucket and we are just left with the naive ending of "and then they died, end of story".
It's pathetic way to end a story of otherwise good character in a good story with such enjoyable vistas and other details with thousands of hours behind and for this reason I will not recommend this game for anyone.

What the person above me said, someone clearly didn't get the message of "main" part of RDR2.

My problem is i have bought the game years after release and the spoilers meanwhile are to find everywhere, even in random comments in technical Threads.

So before i got into the game, i already had to read what will happen and since then i basically have no motivation to keep playing.

rdr2 is a prequel .. rdr1 is about John and his revenge.... It's not about how awesome Arthur is ...

Arthur Morgan's progress (both in character and story) is the complete opposite of most video game characters. Usually you always start at the character's lowest and weakest point so that you feel a sense of progress each time you advance in the story, but Arthur starts at his prime and when he is physically and mentally strongest. Then, when the story ends, it is the complete opposite of having the character at his strongest point (death) and he mentally ends up scared, doubtful, and regretting everything he has done.

Arthur's ending is different and shocking but that doesn't make it bad by any means, it just represents that the lowest point of a character can bring out the best in him to the point of being able to leave a legacy (a legacy that continues in the epilogue until RDR1).

The way I saw it he willingly sacrificed himself so John could escape and go live his days out with his family, since he knew he was dying anyway. Kind of the whole point behind the "redemption" part, no?
I think the redemption part is Arthur and some of the gang members are redeemable characters, and you can choose to play the game this way if you want.

The main theme of the game isn't redemption. It's hinted at throughout the early game and builds up to a point where it's pretty obvious not long after Arthur gets sick. And it keeps getting thrown in your face over in over to the point where I earnestly believe anyone mature enough to play this game should catch on to it.

Even now in 2024 tuberculosis kills, if it's not treated.
