Deadeye tagging not working

I used to be able to tag snakes with the bow with deadeye, now it doesn't allow me to tag the snakes anymore. I can tag other animals just fine using other weapons, but for some reason it just doesn't let me do it with the bow anymore.

What's the reason for this?

Also, any tips on killing snakes with small game arrows? I swear my arrows do not fly straight. I can visually see the arrows flying off course slightly, and when you're trying to shoot a snake in the head from 10 meters, slightly off means you're always missing. I've wasted so many small game arrows trying to shoot snakes because the tagging stopped working.

I spend most of my time in this game shooting birds for feathers and crafting more small game arrows.
