If the marker is no way near a path/road; then it's not going to really work like you want it to.
If you are on a mission/quest where a Yellow Pathway is highlighted, you can still use a Red Marker and it still marks that path. But during such a time when you have a yellow path, you can't see the red path, only the red (X) marker on your mini-map off on the outer edge to mark direction of marker; due to the yellow pathway is overlayed ontop of the red pathway.
Verify your game cache.
Wipe out all GPU Drivers, reboot and install them fresh, then setup the GPU control panel properly.
You say the latest patch broke some features. Yet the Stables are fixed now and all is quite we'll now. Only new issue I see is you can't grab someone with rope and directly hog-tie them or it bugs out and ties you up instead. Only way around that I see without killing the person is use fists or a weapon and knock them out, then hog-tie them. It's very annoying if trying to do Bounties though. Aside from that everything is working.
Cheaters however can mess with public sessions and cause your game to crash or cause various game features not to work. Such as inability to use Horse or any Weapons when within the vicinity of the cheating player, stuff like that.
Maybe pick something a bit shorter distance, then when getting close to that, open the big map and change it to be further ahead.
If the (X) marker destination is not near a path/road (like say off the path up a big hill or into the woods, it can't navigate you there in a specific manner, only to the path/road closest to there, then you're on your own to find your way.
It would be like relying on Google Maps/GPS to lead you safely and accurately through woods and mountains that have no real pathways.
This is all one reason why I suggest users play Story Mode, as then you'll be a master a getting around without markers in RDO once you learn the visuals of the map much more. It's a major reason why I was well prepared for getting around in RDO, as well as GTA Online (played that Story first and learned the game map)
Just make a startup.meta file
Instructions and file contents are on my comments profile.
If you use a mod to do it, you'll eventually get banned from RDO.
