Vulkan vs dx12
Whats the go with these loaders, dx12 is by far better for me personally I'm using a 4080 i7 13700k

Vulcan's fps is a good 30 percent less. Yet I see numerous people say the opposite 🤔 thing is a fair few mods are vulkan dependent

on windows 11 there is a difference in performance between vulkan and dx12, on windows 10 the performance is the same
My specs: rtx4080/32ram/
On windows 10 with a 4070 TI and I7-11700K here.

I have multiple issues with DX12 that don't happen in Vulkan such as;

Game crashing on startup saying low memory unless I disable steam overlay.
Weird misplaced beard textures on Arthur's face.
Some strange pure black shadows.
HDR breaks and looks awful.
Flickering candles/smoke.
Flickering in custscenes.
Slightly lower FPS.

Not sure why I have all these issues with DX12, but Vulkan works great for me. I've played maybe a couple hundred hours with DX12 and the other ~1100 on Vulkan.
Yea in Win10 it's the exact same performance with both APIs no matter which GPUs I've tried.

If you are changing the API back and forth in RDR2 to compare them, test them, etc. You'll need to wipe the shader cache each time you make that switch, after exiting the game. Also go to %LocalAppData% > NVIDIA and wipe the contents.

The bug with facial hair is related to using DLSS/FSR, avoid using that at all. While it might fair well in RDO, it's completely bugged in Story Mode.

Overall, for RTX GPUs in RDR2, Vulkan really is the better more stable option.

You might also need to properly configure NVIDIA Control Panel.
I5 13600kf+RTX 4080 here. Using WIn 10 64bit pro the performance was about the same with DX12 or Vulkan. Using Win 11 64bit Pro the performance gives DX12 a very slight lead maybe 1-3% for me. The only problem is DX12 crashes a lot for me with either OS. Vulkan is extremely stable. Note also that there was a slight decrease in FPS switching from Win 10 to 11. But not as bad as people have said. Max maybe a loss of 5% fps but i think it was closer to 3% for me.

OP i've no idea why your Vulkan would be a 30% loss in fps for you. Sounds like something is wrong on your end. And check everything Bad said.

Nvidia control panel under adjust image quality i use Let the 3d application decide. Under manage 3d settings I leave global settings at default except i have shader cache set to 10gb. For rdr2 program settings i leave that at default as well. I may change some settings here and there like Low Latency Mode or power management for some games. But it's pretty rare when i do that. And a few other settings for games here and there. But for rdr2 default it is.

I use Ultra settings except I do know that the graphic setting Unlocked Volumetric Raymarch Resolution I always have Off as it's a huge hit in fps with no visual gain that anyone has noticed. Whether that's the difference between DX12 and Vulkan i've no idea. And TAA high is supposedly broke but TAA Medium works fine which i use.

Yup medium TAA looks better with about the same performance anyways.
Vulcan runs far smoother for me on the 4090, i9 13900k . but vulcan is completely broken atm and i ctd all the time. Having been forced to using directx12, its okay but its not better.. slight stutters here and there, but it doesnt ctd nowhere near as often/
That is odd.

On GTX GPUs I always had better luck w/ DX12 in RDR2.
Where as with RTX 20/30 series Vulkan was extremely stable all day long, no crashing what so ever.

If you play RDR2 often enough using any NVIDIA GPU, for now stick to Game Ready Driver 551.23

Latest ones are not stable enough.

The issue with TAA is it can cause some visual in/out lighting effects on grass/trees and some other edges during various movements of the camera, however this is going to vary for everyone, not just based on Screen Resolution. So when using TAA you really need to test in-game using the TAA Image Sharpness slider and see where the "sweet spot" is for your Display and Screen Res. The sharpness slider has a range of 1.0 all the way up to 4.0 (confirmed by the System.XML file that holds the Graphics settings via number values or word values)

This is a really good piece of advice, I ran red dead last year no problems but since a few drivers ago my game does nothing but crash in Vulkan
You only need the very latest drivers IF it actually fixed real issues with the very latest games, and you actually have those games.

Stop updating crap blindly.

Like when NVIDIA had drivers that were said to be needed for launch of games like Diablo 4 and CyberPunk 2077. I was using a driver about 6 months old and it worked just fine for those games and was more stable then the very latest driver they were pushing.

Don't even let MS update your OS automatically. Use Group Policy and also the Pause Updates for 30 days options in Win10/11. If you have Home Edition, install Pro or Enterprise Edition, avoid Home Edition like it has COVID or something. Home Edition forces users to have limited options. It's really dumb and they should get rid of it altogether. Having Win10/11 PRO on a system doesn't require any higher specs, more RAM; etc, compared to Home Edition.

To be honest when us laymans get a pc one of biggest advice is to keep graphics card updated and a lot of “fixes” this number one solution so forgive us for updating drivers when nvidia tells us. Now that being said, it’s a good point and I’m going to try Installing a driver from later last year when red dead worked fine and see how I get on. Admittedly I’ve only started having these issues since a driver update maybe 2 or so months ago.

Not enough of a dweeb to have home edition tho, I had my pc built by people who know what they’re doing. Also stress test the ♥♥♥♥ out of my hardware when these issues started and everything is working as intended.
3080ti with all updates, can't tell any difference between DX12 and Vulkan.
What issues I was having, I fixed by exiting MSI Afterburner.

Yeah I was getting that dumb memory error crash until I pegged it to be msi afterburner overlay being on while loading the game. Now I load the game first then turn afterburner on and it's fine
Afterburner (and similar apps like it) do not get along well with DX12.
Vulkan though with those OSD shouldn't be of any problems.
Just need to configure RTSS properly.
