I really like the gunplay in RDR1 with the auto-aim, usually I hate controller aiming but rdr1 locks the target on everyone's chest so if you flick the right stick up at just the right amount you can get a perfect headshot every time, insanely satisfying for a controller shooter.
I think the ending of the story where you play as Jack and get revenge is such a kick in the teeth, and genuinely a bad writing choice. John gave everything so his son could have a normal, legal life, only for his son to get revenge for no reason because the wild west is dead by the time Jack kills Agent Ross, it's not like he can go ride with another gang, it's the roaring 20s now. This ending is only made worse to me by this prequel game that shows how much not just John but Arthur sacrificed for Jack, only for Jack to go against the words of the mentor of both of those men "revenge is a luxury we can't afford" In their attempts to make a satisfying ending by allowing the players to get revenge I think they made it much, much worse, go home Jack, it's 1926, have a family, let the credits roll with us knowing that the revenge, the violence of the wild west is over.
I don't think the game is bad I just never particularly liked it, I feel the same way about most GTA titles so I'm just not that into rockstar games, compared to this game which might be my favourite game ever, finally dethroning favourites I've had for years.
As for the edited save file, it's also a great choice if you want to play as Arthur in the entire open world. It's really a choice as to what year you want to play in, and what home you want to have.
If you want to play Arthur with the gang and the camp in 1899
Download these
-AB scripthook
-the lockdown manager
-Disable Out of Bounds Snipers
Once in game press f7 and unlock all regions. The map is now open to you and you can play the story as well.
If you want to play as Arthur in 1907 with Beecher's Hope, just get the edited save file I linked and put it in Documents/Rockstar Games/profiles/(your profile code)
Uncle, Jack and I think Abigail is there, I think Charles left as the ending credits implied I didn't really look around for them. With the edited save file you shouldn't need the lockdown manager or the NoInvisibleSnipers.asi, but I would still get Disable Snipers just in case.
