I know in multiplayer you can buy different stirrups at stables to improve your horses speed. You might be able to do the same in single-player?
Yes, this - you must hold the shift key to gallop, so <Shift+W> is gallop. And it takes a while for your horse to accelerate to full speed.
In SP, in towns (and during certain quest missions) you horse speed is limited. (and on certain railroad bridges).
Also, you maximum speed is not attainable until you are fully bonded with your horse.
Saddles and Stirrups work generally the same in SP as RDO.
What's worse is when the turning all of a sudden seems to be at 80,000 DPI... barely touch left/right and the horse veers 90 degrees off the trail - and of course dead into a tree.
