If he does that he's gonna get attacked by a random horned beast every 2 minutes. The game throw them at you any time you stay on foot in the wilderness more than a minute. A shame because it's really great and immersive to just walk and find stuff like that but meh. Better be good at dodging and keeping a riffle with you at all time.
Most animals are more scared of you than you might think. I think the problem for most people is they RUN into them... when you're causally walking things are a little different. There are more than enough sound cues that give away danger ahead. I've been roaming across the map for quite some time now and was able to fight of any danger with ease. Even the most "dangerous" animals in the game like cougars and bears telegraph their presence if you pay attention.
