Anyone got a fix for this problem
Error 'Only Windows 10 and later are supported. Please verify your OS version and check your windows compatibility setting by right-clicking the game icon and going to Properties>Compatibility.'

This error recently came up since the latest update of rdr2. It completely prevents me from playing the game.

I have windows 10 and have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling.

Have you attempted to run the game using compatibility modes or running as admin?

^Yep.

@op - Are you sure there are NO .exe's in the process set to run with windows compatibility mode enabled? R* launcher .exe's - check all. Social club .exe's - check all. Game .exe's - check all. (by all - I mean all .exe's in the associated folders - r* launcher installed folder, social club installed folder, and rdr2 game folder)

edit - and removing compatibility mode on the steam.exe as well~

In the off chance 'none of this works' - you need to also verify the launcher and game is actually closed. Open taskmanager / details and close anything rdr2, R*, social club etc - or restart the computer. I also wouldn't boot it with windows, nor minimize to systray when you close.

Someone else claimed that 'run as admin' also caused it - but I haven't been able to personally test. A friend that did - didn't have issue - so YMMV there. There are others saying they needed to check mark 'run as admin' on launcher or launcherpatcher to not have issues (sounds like typical R* launcher silliness that has been going on for years there - or they made more than 1 change at a time... /shrug).

There were 'fixes' in the past that had people toggle compat mode to get the game to work. Many have long since forgot about them - as it didn't do much til now. I just now flipped them on launcher, launcherpatcher, and rdr2.exe - and am told I am on win 7. Undid them and works fine. I'd start there.

If they are all 'clear' - there are other things that could cause this (like duplicate folders / multiple installs, and more) but rule the common ones out first...

/goodluck

edit - similar info on the nonsense -

-.-

Rightclick rdr2 in steam, properties, installed files, browse installed files.
It 'should' open a windows with the game files.
rightclick rdr2.exe - properties, compatibility tab.
If compatibility mode is checked - uncheck, apply.
(some say run as admin is causing it too - you can test).
do the same thing above - for playrdr2.exe

Then, find your R* launcher icon if you have one 'somewhere' - rightclick - open file location.
There are multiple .exe's (4 - I don't count uninstaller) in that location as well. Same thing - uncheck compatibility.

You may want to go farther and find the social club files and check those too.
They tend to default into c / program files / rockstar games / social club

edit - and removing compatibility mode on the steam.exe as well~

After you've verified that at least 6 (mentioned ones) do not have that mode chacked...
Test. Doesn't work? Restart pc, try again.

Still? Need more OS details. There's some claiming none of that is working but not much else.. short of some claiming 'run as admin' is causing it but not personally seen it. And again, this is something you can simply test by enabling, or disabling that on the same compatibility tab on the .exe's - particularly the launcher, or launcher patcher.

/goodluck

I am attempting to do all that above but when I go to properties there is no option for compatability

A potential solution to the problem is to download Rockstar Games launcher and run the game through it (which requires linking your Rockstar Games account to Steam's). At least worked for me

I fixed it for myself. I had Steam itself running in compatibility mode for some reason. Unchecked that, restarted Steam, and then the game worked.

Just when you think you've tested/covered every base - someone finds another. The joy of not being able (not wanting to) remote in and observe systems with the issue.
Thanks for providing more info.
