It's the only way to play in peace.
The only way to avoid cheaters is to use a third party method to create private sessions (since there's currently no officially-supported way to create private sessions).
If you want to play in public sessions and not get constantly harassed by cheaters your only option is to pick this game up on console (where cheating isn't a problem).
Final Note: This game has no text chat. You'll need to use a mic to communicate, however, don't expect any replies; the vast majority of players do not use mics. The most socialization you'll usually see online is someone using a "wave emote."
All-in-all, I'd say there's better PC multiplayer experiences out there.
You can't play with others without giving out your password for story missions etc - however you can do all the freeroam missions, and telegram missions - just with freeroam you can get most of the stuff you need in the game.
That's the hackers. Then there are the bugs. Getting kicked out of quests because R* had a problem just before the quest finishes and having to do the whole thing again. Getting trapped in the stables and not being able to do anything except press alt+f4.
Last R* game I ever buy.
The "startup.meta" method allows you to play either solo or with friends, it's up to you. But this method is the only way you can play online in peace without anyone who you don't want in game joining and spoiling your fun.

I use this method shown in the video, have done for over a year now, and I couldn't be happier.... Rockstar should've done this from the start!
Everything is easy when you know how....
Don't be fooled into thinking online isn't as bad as some people make it out - good chance they just want someone they can torture because everyone else left and they have no one to abuse.
Fair warning for everyone - if you go online without private lobbies your risking too much - there has been so many discussions - video's - and screenshots showing all this.
If there wasn't private lobbies - the game would be either unplayable or dead from people abusing mods/hacks.
They’ve completely botched it in the PC versions of Grand Theft Auto Online and Red Dead Online; here’s hoping things improve for the PC version of GTA6. :/
You may choose to remain ignorant, angry and insulting, or you may choose to read a bit wider than the calendar behind the bathroom door; Cyber-crime is a global threat, and an industry worth trillions. Ask any government institution, including the military how much money they throw at combating it, and yet, a little 12 year old kid in dark room somewhere can still break in and cause havoc.
Every single major studio in the online gaming industry pump many millions into fighting the scourge of hackers breaking in, while salty, uninformed babies spit their dummies out and rage about it.
Use the meta, developed by fellow gamers who are as fed up as all of us, and enjoy the game.
Or keep hating.
