NEED HELP: Extremely low FPS out of nowhere SOLVED
Decided to jump on RDR2 today after not playing for a few weeks and was met with very, very bad stuttering and lag. A few weeks ago, I could play with most settings on Ultra with no lag or stuttering whatsoever.

So, I figured it was an update so I proceeded to update my video card and windows. I also verified integrity of game files. Restarted and attempted to retry.

Same thing is still happening.

Ultra settings now freezes RDR2.
High settings now freezes RDR2.
Medium settings take a very, very long time for things to load with 1-2 fps.
Low settings take a long time to load and bounce between 1-2fps up to 15fps depending on what is going on.

I am running an i7 with a 3080 and SSD. This lag was not here a few weeks ago.

No idea what is causing this.

Any help is appreciated.

UPDATE:

I believe its an update through rockstars app that does something to graphics configuration. For some reason, RDR2 was loading up on my intels integrated graphics as opposed to my actual video card. I didn't have the option to change video cards in RDR2's settings. So, I opened up geforce experience and started the game from there after optimizing the settings and now I can play everything on Ultra again. :D

You might have something cranked up in the part of the graphics settings you have to unlock. I know messing around with those can get you down to slideshow framerates.

try swapping the graphics api in graphics settings from dx12/vulkan
make sure tree tesselation is off.
check resolution size.
turn off taa sharpening of tweak it down. reduce water physics a little.

also do alot of restarts.

if i tweak the graphics alot, the game starts chunking up and chugging.
but goes back to babyazz smooth after a restart.

Thanks for comments...

When I tested 'low' settings I literally turned every option to low and anything with an 'off' option was set to off. 15fps max and fps shoots to 1-2 when moving around or doing anything.

What ever happened to If it ain't broke, Don't fix it?

I think I figured out the issue mate you have to allow the Rockstar game launcher as an exclusion through your windows defender there's something with the fender that's blocking something it doesn't like and it's screwing with the settings I just did that a little bit ago and now it's running buttery smooth on the native resolution and ultimate settings

Holding solid and steady at about 30 FPS because that's my monitors refresh rate in 4k but it's holding it fine now doesn't go blow it like it was I also had to turn vertical sync on other than that it seems fine also switched it into the DirectX 12 mode seem to help it run a lot smoother at least on the nvidia card

Other games are working fine. It is only RDR2. :/

I switched out Vulken and Directx12 with everything either low or off... I figured it was some sort of update issue so I updated everything I could. I have no idea what is tanking the FPS...

I get 15-16 fps on the benchmark on lowest settings with everything turned off.... Vulken seems to be a bit better as DirectX12 seems to really plummet my FPS.

i know the guy in other post said he rolled his driver back to the one from 10/11/23 that fixed the same issue for him
