Sudden wave of problems - why?
Well it seems that a lot of people are experiencing some form of problems with the game, judging by this discussion forum on steam. When starting the game, I can run the game for approximately 10 seconds in-game and then the game freezes and crashes to desktop, with the error "ERR_GFX_STATE".

I have experienced this now for the very first time since the release of RDR2 PC Steam, have witnessed some odd and extremely frustrating problem. The game crashes when using API as Vulkan. I noticed that the error ERR_GFX_STATE doesn't replicate when I run on DX12, but the performance is way worse then which ruins the whole experience.

I have never before witnessed this error, or anything else. This makes me wonder if they did some update on the game that has caused these countless issues? It started just today without any explanation.

I am not using mods etc.

I just replied to someone's separate post before I saw this one. There is a known issue with the latest game ready NVIDIA driver (535.98) which has RDR2 crashing a few minutes in

There is a mention on the NVIDIA page, issue 4140319
NVIDIA feedback thread[www.nvidia.com]

I downloaded the previous version of the driver I had been running, 532.03, and it is running fine again.

This isn't an issue with the game itself, but the latest NVIDIA driver.

i`m having the same problem . SUDDENLY !!!!!!!
This is so confusing. Rockstar Games support couldn't figure it out either. Google is more helpful lmao. I'll be following this thread and others if someone has a fix. What I did try:

- Verify integrity of game files
- Add launch option "-ignorepipelinecache"
- Try and mess with the settings, even running the game with lowest possible graphical settings with API on Vulkan

None worked. As long as the API is Vulkan, the game goes completely nuts. DX12 works, but then the performance problems kicks in. That's the reason why I never used DX12 in the first place, so this is really a bummer now.

Performance problems with DX12.... What are you talking about???

I run the game on DX12 and have no performance issues at all, but if I switch to Vulcan then I start getting crashes back to desktop, so go figure.

Seems to me most of these problems started after the September update last year.

Prior to that most questions on the forum were game related (IE how do I do this or that) but since then it seems most are technical issues.

the only problem i have is that the game crashes after like 3 minutes i updated my nvidia drivers so maybe thats the problem idk

The majority of people reporting problems after the September update are Nvidia users.

It's also worth checking your graphics settings after a driver update to see if the new driver has increased the demand on your vram.

In my personal opinion the most stable driver for this game is the pre - September driver 516.94

It is caused by the latest Nvidia drivers. I was having the exact same issue, I rolled the drivers back to the previous version, no more issue.

Facing the same issue and I play RDR2 every day, since last nvidia update drive that I installed 535.98, game crashing.
And one of the notes posted by nvidia is: [TouchDesigner] Degraded performance using Vulkan [3952439]
Pretty sure has something, cause Rdr2 hasn't any update recently.

Just reinstalled the previously NVIDIA drive (532.03) and the issue is gone. New drive (535.98) is giving a bug with the Vulkan API.
Ah yes, this could make sense. I updated my Nvidia drivers just about before these problems started to occur. I haven't ever had the need to revert to previous driver update, but I would imagine that isn't too hard with Nvidia. I'll have to try this.

About any prior problems that has occurred after september, I don't know. I got back to this game like a little less than a month ago, after having had a good 1,5 year break on RDR2.

Im using the nvidia driver 531.68 and its ok, doesnt crash when its running. I have an issue loading the initial save from the opening menu. If I try to load it with DLSS turned on then it crashes during the load. I turn it off and then back on once the game is playing.

Glad it's not just me, hope they fix it soon

It's not a wave of problems; its a wave of new game owners; happens every Steam Sale.

People running the game just fine aren't going to bother posting; they are too busy enjoying their games.

Get off of those 535.xx drivers; use 522.25; 531.68; or 532.03
There is no reason right now you need a driver any newer; even for Diablo 4 or System Shock. Both games runs just fine on 532.03
