Please help! Just finished the main story but I have been set back to the start

I came back online today to start playing as John Marston but when I loaded into the game the very first cut scene started. I was confused and checked my saves and it says that I don't have any, I had auto save turned on when I played the game and haven't deleted the save I had. I'm not sure what happened or if my game can be recovered, can anyone help at all?

I think you can always use Steam cloud

There is only a single Auto-Save slot, so you should always be doing incremental, manual saves just for common sense reasons.

Also, the Auto-Save uses one of the limited Save slots, so if you load up all the save slots with Manual Saves, and over-write the Auto-Save slot, the Auto-Save mechanism can Over-write one of the Manual Saves (since no other slots are available).

And if you happen to be using Cloud Saves, well... i always suggest not using that feature.
