How to verify files
So, I bought RDR2 through Steam and I've been playing for over a week now. It said that the RockStar Launcher needed to update so I let it update and then it prompted me for my admin password to install the update. I exited out of the password prompt (it also stopped running RDR2 on Steam), then I came back, pressed the play button and I got this error:
"Unable to launch game, please verify you game data."

I then verified the files vie Steam but I still get the same error. How do I fix it?

I'd start with running RDR2 as administrator.
Rightclick the PlayRDR2 in the games directory should be in Common.

This same problem happened a few weeks back when they updated the game again.

The most likely solution is turning off your antivirus when starting the game. The launcher is being stopped by all kinds of antivirus programs for many people and it gives that error message of files needing to be verified which ofc does absolutely nothing.

Once the launcher has started and the game is on, your antivirus won't stop the game anymore until you close it again.

They've already caused and fixed this same problem at Rockstar like 3 times in the past. It's sad it keeps happening over and over again.

does this mean they'll potentially fix it?

Fix what? You didn't let game update yourself. I guess go to add/remove programs, uninstall social club, uninstall R* launcher, go here https://socialclub.rockstargames.com/rockstar-games-launcher and download new launcher installer, run it as admin.

You are misleading people. The game does not start if you try to run as administrator.
This update was a while ago.

So basically just directly install the Rockstar Games Launcher?

You wouldn't believe this, but I got it to work. I play via steam

So what I did is that I uninstalled the Rockstar Game Launcher via the Apps and Features settings (I use Windows) Then, I just ran the game via Seam. It prompted me to reinstall the launcher and then it worked

They have fixed it before. It always takes them a while to do it but has been fixed every time. I'm glad reinstalling the launcher worked for you but it didn't work for me nor several other people. Reinstalling the launcher simply results in the same problem happening again as soon as the launcher updates itself again.

Probably because you have a different problem, the dude here just didn't allow admin access to finish installation.
