Question about bounties
I was doing the main quest where we went out into the woods and found that gang that we have been fighting with. Its when we used our prisoner to lead us to their hideout. We shot and killed everyone but the leader wasnt there. I searched the fireplace and found the money. It seemed like as soon as I stepped out of the cabin that I was a wanted man. Its like someone must have walked by and seen me. I never saw anyone.
I got out of there but now I have a $15 bounty on my head. Im broke and cant pay it. Will the bounty go away with time if I dont get in trouble anymore, or is it permanent? Does bounty accumulate over time too then?
I guess I should have been wearing my mask when I shot up that place?

Being wanted after that mission is normal, so you just have to haul ass out of there as fast as you can . . . not sure about a mask, never tried it on that one.

Bounties do accumulate with each offense, in each state, and don't go away until you pay them.

Find the burnt-out town called Limpany south of Valentine and north of Flatneck station along the Dakota river. Inside the sheriff's office there's a lockbox under the desk with a gold bar in it that you can sell to a fence . . . that should give you plenty to take care of bounties until you build up some more cash, or find more gold bar stashes.

Good luck ;)

The Wanted Status is automatically triggered. You are supposed to run then to avoid a bounty.

Bounties will stay. U could avoid the area with bounty and make some money elsewhere. Hunting, selling, looting places, rob people and quickly escape. 15 is not too bad

Bounty only will go up if they see you again doing something or other weird occasions

Thanks both of you. So when you commit a crime like that, even though it was out in the middle of the woods where nobody saw, it will trigger a bounty? I did run but ran into some bounty hunters or lawmen, not sure what they were, and they shot and killed me. When I came back from the dead I had the bounty. I have some money now, I think i might just go pay it off.

The "police" system is a bit lazy and not good yeah
Random people all across the country know you with name and face too :winter2019joyfultearssnowman:

Just always try to leave the red area quickly

You can also walk up to the Police and Surrender. Going to Jail will retain honor and the Bounty will be paid out of your pocket if you have the money, however it will only cost you roughly 60-75% of the bounty $ amount.

If you go to Post Office you have to pay the full amount.

Get used to saving your game often and ensure you do so. Never use or rely on the Autosave slot. That way you could have just reverted back to just before the start of that mission and maybe done a better job. It's early in the game though, live and learn.

If you ever get WANTED, immediately move away from the red area. Otherwise it won't go down and then away until you do. As the Police will come and search the red area.

Thanks.
I tried going to the sheriff's office and talked to the sheriff and there was no option to surrender. It was in Valentine. I ended up paying the full $15 at the post office. I dont understand why the sheriff didnt offer me to surrender. Maybe the sheriff's office in Valentine doesnt work that way? I already caught two of his wanted people too.

You have to do it like this if you want to surrender.

You are wanted in that state (it will show it on your large Map)

With a bounty $ amount on your head you can walk into a town where the Sheriff and/or Deputies are. While the bounty is active it will already then show the Police Officers on your Map and Radar Map as Red Stars. Walk up to one so he can see you, wait for the wanted level to kick in, he will pull out his side-arm, when available press E to surrender. You need to do this while on-foot and with no weapons out at any point, otherwise they will just start shooting.

Probably what happened to you is you actually had a mission trigger at the Sheriffs Office. As those do popup from time to time.

$15 is no big deal. If you happen to ever shoot Police though, then it would really rack up quick.

Ok, weird. I definitely didnt have that happen. The sheriff could care less I was in his office.

That was in a different state, that you were wanted in? Usually the option pops up so fast you miss it, all guns have to be put away and when a cop is trying to arrest you it pops up to press e. but it is hard to catch it because its a fast prompt. Also the last guy was in the barn and you fist fight him. You can outrun the search for the crime and owe no bounty. yes wear mask even though a gang member on those always says your name the idiots.
You said you found the money in fireplace so how are you too broke to pay 15 dollars?

Yes might be you were wanted in a different State. You will notice on your map the States separated by thick black dotted lines. Or also when wanted, look on your big map and you will see that the area outlined in red is the state you are wanted in. Police in other states will not be aware of that and thus can't take action just by seeing you. However if you get your Bounty around $10 or more and do not pay it off (either via Jail or Post Office) then Bounty Hunters will start coming after you at random. You will know this when you are basically just going about your business, not doing crimes and such (maybe out hunting, picking herbs, crafting at camp fire; etc.) and you will notice a red bar show up on mini-map radar to indicate enemy coming towards you. Then check your big map and see how far away they are (notice the red star icons, that's the Bounty Hunters).

You do not have to attack or surrender to them; you can evade them. They will eventually give up and move away and the enemy goes away as well. However if you continue to have a bounty on your head, they will return at some point. The higher your bounty the larger the search party will be. Large enough and they will have hound dogs with them as well who will attack you.

Ive been buying camp upgrades. I upgraded the leader's tent and mine so I now have fast travel. Im hoping thats useful, it should be. It doesnt have very many places in it yet though. Im not sure how it decides which places Ive been that I can fast travel too. I guess only major places?

I guess it sounds like it was in a differnt state I guess. The whole thing is a bit confusing at first. Ive been mostly able to avoid trouble so far. I plan on stealing a load of lumber at the Appleseed Timber Co., so hopefully I dont get in trouble there! I plan on wearing a mask and doing it at night. I talked to the leader already once and gave him some supplies. I guess, from what I read, after that there will be a cart full of lumber around somewhere? I might have to do a quest with wolves. Yeah, I looked online! This quest to get lumber to the guys building the house sounds tricky, so i went for help online. I even read that if you get there too late that they will be done with the house.l Im hoping they arent done yet.

wanted doesn't mean you have a bounty btw, it just means the law are looking for a wanted man in that area.

if it says "wanted" and then lists the crime below that with a bounty, THEN you are known as the criminal and sol until you pay it off.

this mission tho, is just scripted to have a wanted circle after you leave the house.

so if you want to loot anyone in the area make sure you do it before going in to get the stash, cuz once you get the stash you have to leave to avoid being caught by the law.

also, the sherriff in valentine is like that because he's a quest giver and is bugged out i guess.

he's supposed to be the one who gives us the serial killer quest, but i've never been able to get him to do anything other than the bounty mission intro and then after that he just sits at his desk and does nothing unless im bringing in a bounty.

Yes if you have a Bounty $ ~ you can see this by pressing ALT key and it will show this amount in the center top.

It will also show your Bounty $ amount in your Map. In there you can use WASD to move around the red crosshair and when you move it over from State to State it will show the amount for each based on where the crosshair is.
