Same as it is with the majority of games autosave's.
Solution, ya already know = Manual save.
Manual sve in slot 2 and 3 to prevent auto save over riding it.
Or simply disable auto saves better to just backup saves manually.

the "autosave" feature in RDR2 has never been reliable for me. it seems to save whenever it feels like it, not on some regular periodic schedule.
autosave definitely updates when there's some large calamity, being sure to record your death and ensure you lose some coin.
as others have noted, it is best in rdr2 to use and rely on manual saves - just be sure to leave one slot available for autosave.
