Wow, modded RedM servers are SO MUCH BETTER than RDO!
Just want to let anyone know who wants to play online but hates the hackers in Red Dead Online, do yourself a favour and download RedM and start playing on modded servers! I put it off for ages because I thought it would be complicated but it's incredibly easy.

All you have to do is after having RDR2 installed, download RedM and launch it, no tinkering or modding files required. You can even do it while you have single player mods installed like I do, so you don't have to remove them to avoid bans whenever you want to play online like RDO. As long as none of the mods directly replace base game files which most mods wont do.

You will need to get whitelisted for most servers through discord but it's super easy to do, I've already been whitelisted on several servers. This is great because it easily prevents any cheaters since all accounts are linked to a verified discord, and any hack attempts would be instantly seen by server admins and banned quickly needing a new discord to try connect again.

Aside from all the ease of getting into it and lack of cheaters, the content is exactly what most people always wanted from RDO. You can actually own a farm or a ranch, start a trade and sell to stores and players, have pets, survive zombies, it all depends on the server and what unique things they offer. That's not even mentioning things like RP servers and the ability to have over 200 players in a server at once.

So if you love Red Dead Online on PC do yourself a favour and download RedM and enjoy the true RDR online experience.

I agree... for now. Here's some breaking news:

Did you know they belong to Rockstar? they bought them last week.

The quality of those 3rd party services may deteriorate sooner or later. Also, say goodbye to a big portion of free custom content (e.g. irl stuff imported in-game). The publisher, Take-Two, never endorsed modding when it comes to anything Rockstar related. Instead, say hello again to heavy monetization... Gold Bars and Shark Cards will most likely make their way into RedM and FiveM. Edit: fixed a typo here.

Even worse, they could start charging for mods. People would essentially give their money to Rockstar for work they didn't actually do. "Curated" multiplayer mods?! come on.

This is now an official multiplayer extension. Keep that in mind. Expect limited modding, paid mods (again, multiplayer-only), new restrictions... and possibly no cheaters at all (since RedM / FiveM use their own dedicated servers) - the only good thing. Everything else is about to get worse.

Of course this is terrible, they didnt buy them out as a gift to us, they plan to monetize every nook and cranny of the game they can.

The server I'm in has legendary animals and animals to hunt yes. Some servers have NPC's and some don't, like I said it all depends on which server you play on!

Of course I knew that, the news was everywhere for 2 days as the first win Rockstar has made in a long time.

You clearly don't realise multiplayer server mods already cost money. The server admins pay for them to use on their servers, so that's already been the case before Rockstar bought them.

What in your head makes you think this would mean more limited modding? The main reason they did the acquisition in the first place was to give them even more access to game editing tools and more resources. You seem to have a very backwards perception on what it actually means.

I just found out about RedM after giving up on finding a good zombie server that allowed restorable vehicles you can keep.

I cant wait to see RedM after seeing the rat rod pictures on google!!

I did not know about this. I'll give it a try.
I've tried so hard to RP on RedM. For the first year I said nothing to start arguments when being treated unjustly and I've left the servers quietly. But the last year I have stood up for myself only to get banned from most servers after staff, or friends of staff, kill me, usually in some made up huff over not getting their own way, and when the rules they broke is pointed out it's better to get rid of me instead of them. My favourite character is peaceful and non violent so he never starts fights, so why he gets shot, stabbed, blown up, isn't because of something he has done. Simply put, the owner confuses the fact that making a world to play in DOESN'T make them a God. But they demand that you treat them, staff, and their friends as such or get banned.

The other issue most RedM servers owners have is they all believe that because this game's setting is back when Dime Novels, TV, movies and this game is about lawless murdering gunslingers then EVERYONE must be a murdering gunslinger. They seem to forget that for a society (server) to grow you need people slinging a broom or a hoe and not killing and robbing everyone. It's simple logic you would think, "When most people get robbed and killed all the time, cos that's all the server offers, many leave. New people then face those that remain and those that stay enjoy being evil and new players leave quicker each time."

I still recommend trying RedM but remember what I said. Perhaps you'll enjoy the idea of RedM and what it can offer and you make a non pvp server where the law actually RPs stopping the robbing a killing and then a society thrives. Don't allow any player to just join and instantly start robbing a killing. Make a server where you have to learn to be a gunslinger and outlaw, just like players have to learn to RP a lawman, a Blacksmith, a Horse trainer and so on... And don't ban me!

Yup I agree that things like this can ruin a good server. The hard part is just finding a good server that isn't toxic. I used to enjoy the DRB server about a year ago but I stopped playing for a while after some drama happened where it turned out the leader of the gang I joined was a hacker giving themselves money and kinda ruined the vibe for me. I tried to come back to it recently but it turns out the server was shut down about a month or 2 ago because the owners didn't like the server becoming so serious about RP. Which is ironic. They then tried to sell the server to someone else for money which didn't go over well with the community and it got shut down.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
