Are you trying to force a solo session, or in freeroam with randoms, or in missions?
You are relying on one players PC to act as the Host for the session you have joined into. With the overall features handled on the backend by the SocialClub Services.
Getting booted into your own session is quite random and normal in both games. Not much you can do to avoid it. Sometimes it happens because the Host PC might be very far away and due to your PC/Connections inability to stay within limits of what SocialClub deems as an acceptable Sync between You and that Host PC for the session; this is often why you might get dumped out into your own session, making you the Host PC now for that session once you find yourself as the only player in said session. Works much like a server related ping system, but instead of disconnecting you from a server (which doesn't exist in these games) the sessions work in a dynamic fashion due to how P2P methods function, allowing a player to simply be dumped into their own session instead.
You could then go and finish whatever you were doing if in the middle of something; then press ESC > Online > Free Roam (or Camp) as a means of changing sessions and hopefully the SocialClub system will be able to better match-make you with a session that offers a decent enough overall connection for you.
If you are idle in RDO for 15 minutes, it will disconnect you back to the Red Dead Online main menu system entirely. You'll know you've been idle when you get a popup message in the upper-left stating that you have approx 13 minutes left before being kicked due to being idle. At least this is enough time though to go get a drink, have a smoke break, bathroom break; etc. and still come back to your game just fine.
The change of sessions more often happens when you do mission related stuff or are going in/out of your Moonshine Shack; FYI.
If you are constantly running into an issue where your game is crashing; especially if its a complete crash to desktop without any warnings; it's possible this was triggered by someone in your session with a mod-menu (trainer) that is allowing them to boot and/or crash players at will. If you find that you can't enjoy RDO due to too many cheater related issues; then I would suggest you find some good players to play along with you, then you all get together on a Voice app (such as Discord) and then go from there with getting together in the same session. Alternate methods such as the RDO Private Session CAN work out very well and I highly suggest this method if you are constantly having public session issues regarding cheaters.
RDO private lobby method is the way to go.
Having friends use the same method via the STARTUP.META file and you all using the same password inside the file will put you all into the same private session.
