Can not progress game, Fishing literally broken
This isn't complaining about a mechanic being bad or anything like that. I literally can not progress the game because I can not fish. I'm on the mission where you take Jack fishing, but the game wont let me cast the fishing pole. I hold right click to hold the rod, and when I hold left click to pull the rod back, Arthur just kinda shakes it around in front of him without pulling it all the way back. I found a youtube video of the same thing happening, no clues on how to fix it though.

And yes I have emailed support from rockstar. That was about 24 hours ago now at least. Havent heard anything from them.

Any clues on how to fix this, or skip the mission?

It may happen if you are too far away from water. Face the water and maybe wet your feet a little.

Ive stood in the water, stood on shore, walked away and walked back, restarted the game, restarted my pc, validated files, failed the mission on purpose, restarted the mission, stood in every single pixel you can and faced every direction there is, tried with a controller and a keyboard, annnd not one of those things has fixed it unfortunately :\

Yes yes, I did this too. It did not work. Still just get Arthur playing with his rod like he was, well...playing with his rod.

did you select your bait?

Yes I did. I know, from reading this It may seem as though I am just an idiot and truthfully i am hoping I still am....but I am nearly 100% certain this is some kind of bug/glitch. I have done everything the game has asked me to do and Arthur refuses to do anything besides pretend the fishing pole is a shake weight.

Have to admit i had not tried this. I just attempted and unfortunately it also did not work. It's almost like the game isn't registering that i'm holding the mouse down and instead thinks I'm just clicking really fast.

You are continuing to hold down the right click on mouse after attempting to cast out with left click; correct?

Are you using any mods?

Yes I am continuing to hold the clicks, and fresh install with no mods.

You don't hold the left click.

You face the water, hold the mouse right click, then simply press the left click.
The entire time you actually go to cast and grab a fish, hold right click this entire time.
Left click you only would press (like a trigger) to attract fish.
When fish tugs HARD on the line (not nibble) then press and hold left click.
The rest is a matter of using the keyboard and moving the mouse left/right and/or down/up.
As once you actually have a fish on hook, you not only want to reel it in, but to aid in doing this quickly, you would move the mouse forward as a means of pulling up on the rod; as this helps pull the fish closer to you.

Please ensure all forms of MouseKeys and StickyKeys is disable in WinOS otherwise this can cause issues in some games.

If using a Laptop, plug in an external Mouse.
Touchpad might not work because there might be extra features enabled that interfere with many games, such as scrolling, touch gestures and alike.

Otherwise maybe think about using an XboxOne or Sony DS4/DS5 controller.

Yea i get how it is /supposed/ to work. The game does actually tell you to hold the left click to draw the pole back. Regardless Ive done both, click and holding. Doesn't work. I'm using a brand new pc with a keyboard and mouse. I've tried controllers. They do the same thing. Here Ill just link a video of what's going on in my game:

https://youtu.be/5GnlvPylOBo

That one is not so good quality.

https://youtu.be/B_zwtdpfd44

that one is better, but these are the only 2 instances i'm able to find of others having the same issue.

If this gets resolved and this turns out that I'm just an idiot then on god I'll throw my 4090 in a river. But I swear it's bugged and is literally impossible for me to cast the pole no matter what i do.

When people say "New PC"
I read that as "I actually have yet to configure it properly"

Go and actually DISABLE anything extra for the Keyboard and Mouse.
These things are on by default in the OS.

The game also has options to assist users with controls that you have to "tap tap tap" or "hold" try that on/off and see how the game does.

It could even be your mouse. Many mice suffer from an internal double-click issue.

Man I don't know what to tell you. I don't want to type a novel here defending myself and explaining why it is not my hardware and that I promise I'm not dumb, I know how to video game. It's not my pc, and it is not my mouse or keyboard. I don't have issues in any other game what so ever. Heck, I don't have an issue in 99% of the rest of RDR2. Just the fishing.

Thanks for the help, but my game is still being buggy.

Very strange bug indeed.

I would try loading up your save game, go do every other Story Mission outside of the fishing and such and see if that in any way helps. Before trying the fishing with Jack mission again, ensure you're cores/bars are all topped off as well. And once you reach the fishing spot with Jack try and talk with him until that's no longer an option anymore, then try Fishing
