Buck antler trinket, and hunting birds

Hello

I have crafted the said trinket, and tried to hunt small birds for perfect carcass with the varmint rifle, because it seems some people are able to do that. Though, I recieve only good carcasses from the birds with the rifle.
Is it even possible to get perfect carcasses from small birds with the varmint rifle, if you have the buck antler trinket?
It's so hard to hunt them with the bow when they are too high up in the sky...

I acctually managed to get several perfect carcasses from the bird with the varmint rifle... I shot down a flock of maybe 7 birds, and a few of them were perfect

In my experience, the prey needs to initially be 3-star for the trinket to have a chance to work. Yes, you using the varmint rifle on small birds will reduce them to a 2-star, but the trinket will provide a *chance* of restoring it to a 3-star. So, maybe try focusing on natural 3-stars...

Also, with the help of binoculars, you can sneak up on several species of small birds - they'll often sit on the railing of bridges, or on large rocks in a river, providing opportunities with the bow and small game arrow.

Ah, that explains why all of them were 2 star on the ground, but when picked up they became 3 star again. Good to know.
