I just had this problem and got it fixed, but I am currently getting 2 other errors at random.

TO fix this current error, try going to the game settings and changing from Vulcan to DirectX 12 in the graphics section. If you can not get the game to boot to the main menu to do this, type in the error in youtube. There are some videos that tell you how to change the settings manually in your documents folder.

I'm getting the other GFX error, and I CAN NOT figure out a fix. I've tried everything. Someone else had a similar problem, so I think their last patch screwed the game for a minute.

What patch? Hasn't been an RDR2 update in quite a long time.
The issue is the GPU Drivers. Clean install older ones; wipe the GPU cache from your OS and Game Folder.

Is there any projected fix coming from Rockstar for this? If not I'll probably just refund the game.

Maybe if NVIDIA would stop breaking what was working perfectly fine before with regards to this game. They the ones screwing up here.
deadlypanda Jul 16, 2023 @ 7:03am
There hasn't been an nvidia patch since it stopped working, so i assumed it was a red dead patch. Maybe the game is just broken XD. I'll try downloading an old nvidia patch though.

Edit: didn't work

Changing two lines in a file under Documents\Rockstar Games\Read Dead Redemption 2\Settings\system.xml

<API>kSettingAPI_Vulkan</API>
<locked value="true" />

to

<API>kSettingAPI_DX12</API>
<locked value="false" />

Also update the graphic card in the info below if you don't have the same gpu as this
<videoCardDescription>NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090</videoCardDescription>

If that file does not exist, you can use mine below. Just copy and paste it into a text file, then save that text file as "system.xml" in "Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings". You may also need to create the settings folder if you've never gotten it to launch.

Copy the info below to the new file if you don't have the system.xml file in the Settings folder.

StartMenu > type Graphics
Click Graphics Settings
Browse and add PlayRDR2.exe and RDR2. exe to that listing and select High Performance GPU for both.

That's really all you should need to do. Once in-game change Vulkan to DX12, apply and then exit the game and restart it.

I tried this and I still get the error. I have to go in to the documents\rockstar games\red dead redemption 2\settings\system.xml file to change it from vulkan to dx12,

I had a fresh install so I had to create the settings folder and the system.xml and copy and paste all the info and change vulkan to dx12 in the file.

If the settings.xml file doesn't exist then the game should be able to load up fine using Vulkan. It's just suggested for overall stability that this be changed to DX12 once the game is up and running. But it's not needed to change that really unless you are having major issues while using the default Vulkan.

Make sure you...

Launch RDR2 from Rockstar Launcher; not Steam

nope, none of that worked for me when I tried it, only thing that worked was creating the file and editing those 2 lines.
