You can sell most things; animal parts, medicine tonics, stolen goods, etc. Just gotta learn how to acquire them, then find a vendor that will buy them. However, the best ways of doing this will naturally be unlocked by progressing the storyline - something you can do without money.
If you want to hunt for the Trapper with a bit more of a purpose, took at his "Garment Sets" and write down the animal pelts needed for the recipes. Same with his "Clothing" selection.
This would give you a bit more of a reason to seek certain animals out.
Though do be warned, certain animals like the Moose, Badger and Beaver, seem to have bugged spawn rates on PC. Where they don't seem to spawn nearly as frequently as they do on Console. (They are already kind of rare spawns but on PC they're rarer than rare.)
Other ways to get money would be to rob people and places, so you can horde a bunch of valuables to sell later at the "Fence". (Get a bounty of like $30, something like that. This will have I think 4+ Bounty Hunters show up randomly to track you down. When you kill them, they should each have some item of value. Belts, rings or watches, mostly.)
But before you do decide to go hunting for valuables, do yourself a favor and complete the "Satchel" requests from Pierson at Camp. That will increase your Satchel item carry by a lot (when you do the final one).
Other than that, I guess you could try and find a Treasure Map.
Those will net you a hefty profit.
(Or you could download some Mods that add Jobs to the game, or infinite Bounty Hunting missions. Though if you were to do that, you might also want to get WhyEm's DLC, to give your new fortune something to be spent on.)
