Plus it should have maybe helped to save before buying things you weren't sure of what they do, how they work etc.
You can use Camp-Fire (bottom sections of ITEMS in your WHEEL) just outside any town, or in the wilderness and fast travel back to camp or other towns, stations from it.
There is a problem with using the boat right from that camp though, you will need your Varmint Rifle and Bow. To do that you need to get on your Horse and go to the shore then get just outside the border of the camp. Get off your horse and equip those long weapons. Then walk into camp. If you use the horse it forces you to store your long weapons on the horse. If you walk in on-foot after doing this, now you will have them and you can use the boat to visit those islands. Which again you can do at any point in the game. I never needed a boat for that, just use a horse that has extremely high stamina. The horse might leave the island and go back to main-land, if it does you are not stuck. Simply use Camp-Fire and it will spawn you somewhere on the main-land shore.
its the last item in the ledger during chapter 3 Clemens point, its not an upgrade like the wagons and tents. It is a camp upgrade though, like the chicken coop and hitching post. The boat being the last one.
and yes visiting the islands is the best way to get a few items for Pearson, and a few compendium entries and some other collectibles, and if you are bold enough a risky adventure into blackwater, thieves landing. But, yeah you're gonna die and your boat is going to sink.
I'm on a boat. I'm on a boat. Everybody look at me cause I'm standin on a boat.
The only reason I learned to do train robbery without getting any Bounty was so I could complete a Challenge
Now in RDO it's a different story as RDO$ is not so hard to get but you'll need to come up with a good strategy of how you play and partake in various events if you want to rack up that in-game Gold, which will be a required payment method for certain items and upgrades and such.
If you'd like to slow down the game pace an open it up to possible random interactions you could also do this...
When out on some random dirt road and you see a wagon come by that can hold a.passenger, right click towards the driver as if to greet them, press E for Call Out. When they respond (if they don't take off on you) ask them if you can get a ride. Then see where that takes you ;-) When the wagon stops to let you in just be sure to approach without weapons or mask and then press E to enter the vehicle. You can eat and smoke on the trip. To end your ride with them press E again.
Yes I don't see any point to the boat. As boats spawn randomly along various areas of the game's shore-lines anyways if you need an easy way to get to those small islands and such. Overall I was always able to just use my Horse (provided it has very high stamina) to get to all of the small islands as well as the Prison Island, which was needed to go to in order to get a Legendary Fish.
