RDR2 PC Downsides
There are so many frustrating and/or annoying negatives playing RDR2 on pc.

#1 - save game mechanic/system Sucks on pc

  • can't save anywhere, anytime
  • random relocation of Arthur's starting location instead of where he was last at when the player died or quit
  • hold down keys or mash keys to do something
  • convoluted skill/item/weapon wheels and No QuickLaunch/Hotkeys for most used stuff
  • no highlight interactables key (searching for stuff in buildings/camps is a PITA)

Oh well. Could be worse I suppose. Could be like many other ports with checkpoints, lock-ons, etc.

I am surprised no pc gamers made any mods to improve this. Guess it was too much of a PITA.

What? you can save everywhere you want other than mid mission or so, those just use checkpoints
evilMoo Feb 23, 2023 @ 7:50pm
you just need to not be doing a mission or being in combat then you should be able to save.
Prismaa Feb 23, 2023 @ 7:51pm
If you did not know there is save game button inside story menu, for some reason its not in the main menu/esc menu right away, but yeah doesn't work while in combat or in mission but everywhere else it works

It's all the same on Consoles. I have it for PS4 and have played it on/off on their as well since launch still to this day. IDK what the F you're talking about. Learn how the game works for starters.

You can manually save at most times from ESC > Story > Save/Load

What you want to do is get in the habit of manually deleting the autosave from time to time. And before you exit the game. I don't recommend turning the autosave feature completely off.

Yes, I need to familiarize myself more with the game quirks and git gud @ console conventions . . . because Rockstar made this a half-fast console port.

In all fairness, this port is actually much better than many other ♥♥♥. console game ports. i.e. press the yellow triangle, hold the l. bumper, tap the d-pad on pc version

I'm just griping because there aren't any mods or fixes or workarounds for crap.

Thx for tip on autosave -- Is autosave a borked thing that makes RDR2 on pc corrupt?

When you say "manually deleting" autosave do you mean going into file explorer in windows to delete ___whatever_file___ OR using the game's menu option to press [space] to "delete" the top autosaved game slot?

Currently: the game cuts in and asks me about autosave during the most f^x%d-up times and I hold down whatever key to overwrite whatever the hell it wants.

If you've played games like GTAV, The Last of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn; then I don't see any reason why how RDR2 plays would be a big shock to folks.

Manually deleting Autosave can be done at pretty much anytime by pressing ESC > Story > Save. There is a Delete option.

This is helpful before you exit the game that you've manually saved, even if you do not delete the autosave. This way your most recent saved game slot (the one its always going to load when you relaunch the game and press Start/Continue) is what will be loaded when you come back later to continue Story Mode.

Yes when you load up RDR2 again later on, it will ask you at some point "Hey autosave already exists, do you wish to over-write this" Well duh, click YES.

The issue with autosave for the most part is this saves AFTER something bad happens, not before. So if you don't manual save often, you can't go back because if you die or something, the autosave will have saved AFTER this occurs, so you must save manually in order to have something reliable to fall back on before something bad or something you didn't for-see in game does happen, etc.

So again if you do not manually save before game exit, then the next time game loads up, it's going to load your game using the autosave file if that is the most recent save.

Actually, GTAV seems interesting - never played it though.

RDR2 I just started playing. I actually am enjoying it when I'm not struggling with the ported gameplay stuff.

It's tough coming from years of pc playing to adapt to ported stuff.

Cool. This is helpful - Thx!

Yeah, that's what I've been doing. No idea why it keeps removing all my weapons and putting them back on the horse though.

GTAV however does not have those RPG elements, like hunting food, cooking food, making health tonics, etc. While the RPG elements in RDR2 are fairly basic and not too in-depth, it's still there and something you need to deal with. Such as learning how to UP the stats for yourself and your horse(s).

What kills me is how GTA4 and 5 can offer so much options for key-bind remapping, and yet RDR2 does not. It has some, but most you simply can not rebind. Annoying because some buttons are used for more then 1 action and such.

I'm not really sure WTF R* was thinking when it comes to why it tosses your Back/Shoulder weapons onto the Horse when you get off. Yes it's very annoying. It doesn't do this in RDO. I just got used to switching to a Long-gun just before I get off my horse and then its not a problem. However there are other times it will do it, such as when you go to your Camp, or perhaps just before a cut-scene.

I am getting used to all the little quirks and am making progress on learning myself up to get better (dunno how to make all those ingredients into useful/unlocked tonics/etc. though.

I now know to increase health/stamina/deadeye cores with the food tab and the current outside stats with tonics. That's a kinda weird game mechanic.

I think I'd have more time to actually learn more in-game if I wasn't constantly defending myself (dying a lot) from bounty hunters and large O'Driscoll gangs popping up to kill me when I'm in the wilderness. I've been trying to use the binoculars a lot to ID critters and then whoops - here's some red cloud approaching on the mini-map.

I went into town with a bounty and no bandana and nobody does nuthin. I even delivered some bums to the sheriff who mebbe doesn't realize I'm Wanted.

And Arthur (esp. his clothes) looks filthy, matted with mud specks no matter how many hotel baths I take.

You will learn various Tonics and other Ammo Types over time.
They come to you by various characters by way of Paper Pamphlet (aka Recipes)
However even once you have those, you need to open it and click READ. Even if you yourself do not read the text, this tells the game you've read it in order to then learn it. Only then if that recipe unlocked at which you can apply/use at Camp Fires

The default clothes Arthur wears were meant to look that way. And why not, he's worn that Blue shirt so long you can't get the stains out.

You can buy fresh looking clothes at various stores from the Catalog. Not all stores carry the same products in Story Mode. Some stores have more or different items available based on location. For example for a more modern look of a richer person, you'd pretty much need to visit the Clothing Store in Saint Denis for those kinds of clothes.

You can craft various unique items at the Fence and Trapper as well. If not come across them yet, you will soon.

Whenever you mess with getting a Saddle for Horse in Stables, be sure to get one look of "Upgraded Saddle Bags" this allows you to carry up to 5 Outfit Presets. Regular saddle bags only carry 3.

Do not let your Horse die if it's one you really like and have spent alot of time getting its Bonding Level up. As in Story Mode once a horse dies, that's it, it's gone. Where as in RDO they are treated like Cars you can replace, as long as you purchased Insurance. There is no such thing as horse insurance in story mode.
