Little heads up; Animals that you stow on your horse will rot after a while, so it's always a good idea to get the smaller ones, like squirrels and rats, long before getting things like a rabbit. Save them for last.
Before doing the Hunting Requests:
- Make a lot of Small Game Arrows
- Get a Varmint Rifle (Either purchase or read the tip below)
Small Game arrows, you'll learn this recipe from Chapter 2 as the pamphlets will already be in your satchel. To craft one, you'll need 1 arrow, 1 shotgun shell, 1 flight feather. Feathers are found on birds, so kill a fair few and skin them for the feathers. Unless you've upgraded Arthur's Satchel, you won't hold a lot to begin with.
If you're lucky to come across a random event where you save someone from a snake bite, either giving them medicine or sucking out the venom, if you go to the local town (Chapter 2 is Valentine) you'll find them at the gunsmith a few days later and will offer to pay for a firearm for you in return. A good chance to pick a Varmint Rifle up for free!
When hunting the smaller critters, Dead Eye will be your friend. You'll want to hit them in the head with a Small Game Arrow, so use Dead Eye to slow down and sweep across their head while they're running. Birds work the same with marking but you'll want to shoot them when they're flying towards you, else the arrow will miss..
Your Stamina will drain rather quickly with a Bow so it's probably a good idea to look up a guide and find the 20 Dream Catchers which leads you to receive an Arrowhead Charm that reduces the stamina drain by 50%
