Small game arrows doesn't kill squirrel
Tried it a few 4-5 time on a 3 start target now. It always takes 2 arrows to kill a squirrel because it just gets up and ran away after the first hit. Can't even recover the arrow because of that. Same thing happens both with regular shot and dead eye. This is getting really frustrating.

It is frustrating. Improving your aim with deadeye takes practice. Even after more than 2 years I still have critters get up and run away.

Thanks for the tips guys. I didn't know there are critical areas on critters aswell. I will try that tonight.

Critical areas in dead eye become available in chapter 4, during or just after the mission Fleeting Joy.

Good Luck.

Marking the small animals and flying birds before shooting helps a lot.
Also, try to apply the “cover scent” lotion and track the squirrel until it stops. Then mark its head/neck in deadeye and then shoot.

I am in chapter 2 and when I dead eye I can see the critical areas so no you dont have to wait until chapter 4. They are the bright red areas on the creature

Level 1: Auto tagging.
Level 2: Manual tagging.
Level 3: Remain in dead eye if you shoot without tagging someone.
Level 4: Fatal areas are highlighted in dead eye.
Level 5: Critical areas are highlighted in dead eye.
