If you are perhaps that saving at a particular time is a good idea or not, then save to a new slot. That way if the save you just made turns out to be a bad choice, then you still have the save in the other slot(s) depending on how often you save, make use of a new save slot, etc.
Instead of using the Autosave, I disable this. However you must save more often and manually if you turn autosave off. But in the end I found autosave dumb and pointless, as it's mostly saving AFTER something bad happens.
If you leave autosave enabled. Then get in the habit of manually saving anyways, cause those are going to be the only reliable saves. But then also get in the habit of deleting the autosave slot as you go.
If you leave autosave enabled, this might be the save that gets used when you launch your game and click to continue story mode. If need be, after you get back into story mode after a game launch, after it loads you in, press ESC > Story > Load and double check. If Autosave is the top-most save listed, then that is the one it used to load into your Story Mode, which then you probably do not want to have loaded.
