Hear owls but can't see them

Sometimes I hear owls hooting but I can't see them. If you hear animal sounds does it mean that an animal is actually near you somewhere?

No, not always. I know a few places in New Austin where there's a dog that keeps barking, but following the sound only teleports it elsewhere.
