Near start of game - how is it possible to survive ambush from a gang of O' Driscolls?

Near the start of the game near Horseshoe Overlook I get ambushed by a gang of O' Driscolls.

I don't get how it's possible to beat 5 or 6 enemies in open ground when I am killed by 2 or 3 hits like in real life.

What am I missing?

I'm on the horse but that doesn't help when 6 people are shooting at me from all directions and 2 or 3 hits will kill me.

They chase me, shoot from distance and are as fast as my horse so I can't even run away.

Don’t run. Kill them using dead eye and chew tobacco to replenish it. Shooting 5 - 10 - 20 O’Driscolls or anyone else with dead eye is like taking candy from a baby.
Get off the horse, that should be easier for you. Don’t forget to take a carbine or a rifle before you dismount. Activate dead eye. Headshot. Profit.

Edit: or get a better horse.

I dont know on what device you are playing the game.

This game can suck a bit in the beginning for people who just started.. (in my opinion)
- If ambushed you can run away
- You can fight them (for PC press CAPS LOCK, then you have "dead eye" the game goes slower and you can aim better and take less damage.)
- Take it easy, in the beginning you need to figure things out so you will be killed. in my beginning I got killed also and I also came here and "complained" on why I got so killed easily.

I was impatient before I played this game, now after playing the story for 350+ hours I grew to be a very patient man!

You can just rush to Valentine which is really close. They wont pursue you into the village.

What Ellorian said, Deadeye. Always make sure your dead eye is relatively full so you can respond in an ambush by critters or bandits etc. Learn how to use it hunting small animals that don't shoot back.

That said, you'll still die sometimes just because of the janky stuff that happens in open world games like this. I just got ambushed by bounty hunters, dead eyed about 6 of them in the head, and then got one shot while reloading by a single guy that apparently got behind me during the shooting. I was pissed, but it happens. There's a reason life expectancy back then was in the mid thirties lol. Well, that and the tuberculosis.

Game and controls are not real intuitive, but i'm sure you will get the hang of it.

In addition to deadeye, the prologue also taught you how to use "cover" - so find some and use it. As a note - if you stay on ur horse, you need to keep moving and be careful - becuz they will shoot ur horse.

Deadeye is the big over-balancer in the game - making the player completely OP once you get the hang of it. And be sure to "tap it on, shoot, tap it off", then find ur next target.

Ur max quantity of deadeye time will improve gradually, and you can do chores in camp to improve it a bit more rapidly, or find the right elixir/tonic.

I didn't know how to play this game at first (and I'm still finding I don't) so that O'Driscoll gang attack made me into mince meat many times. That is until I started understanding how to use Dead Eye and to remember to refill it when it gets low. The crazy thing about this game is, if you go into your weapons inventory the game slows down enough that you're not being shot at, if you go into your potions inventory the game slow down enough that you're not being shot at, and if you use Dead Eye the game slows down enough that you're not being shot at. Basically, this game has a cheat. Get used to using all them and the O'Driscoll gang will be easier. Knowing how to use Dead Eye and because you know where the O'Driscoll gang start their attack, up on top of that cliff, you can stop just before they attack and take out a couple on top of that cliff or at least a couple coming down off that cliff.

there's such a thing as pulling back to seek cover. Then fight from there.

Ambushes are easy, just let them kill you. Arthur just respawns nearby and you can continue normally. I've never survived an ambush and stopped even trying.
