RDR2 using 8000MB of memory, now unplayable
I bought this game several years ago and have logged a ton of time in single player and online. I went to play it about 6 months ago or so after a long break and now the game is completely unplayable. It starts up just fine, but once it loads the lag is so severe you cant even get Arthur to move. What happened? I have made 0 changes to my pc since I built it in 2020, but now all of a sudden I don't have enough RAM even though I did before. I have dropped all graphics settings to the lowest possible with no change.

System Specs:
Processor: Core i7-8700K 6 core 3.7 GHz
MOBO: ASUS Prime Z390-A
Memory: G Skill TridentZ RGB Series 16 GB (2x8 GB) DDR4 3000
Graphics: EVGA GeForce RTX 2060 SC Ultra gaming 6GB GDDR6 Dual fan

I also have an M.2 for my OS, a 1TB SSD, and a 4 TB HDD that are all working just fine. My hard drive light isn't hardly going when I'm having this issue, so I think it's a RAM issue following an update, but I have no idea why it's using so much all of a sudden.

Help :/

When was the last time you updated your GPU drivers? Have you tried switching to DX12 in the options (or reverting to Vulkan if it's already on that setting).

GPU Drivers should be current, I use the Nvidia GeForce Experience application for that. It was on DX12, switched to Vulkan with no change, switched back. I've turned graphics settings all the way down with no change. My video memory in the graphics settings section isn't even half way utilized

Did you have any mods installed previously?

Might want to roll back your GPU driver if it's auto updating through GeForce Experience. That's if nothing else works though, i'm throwing crap at the wall at this point. :)

In case your game is auto optimized in it, disable that. Then delete system.xml in \Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings\ (even if it isn't). (Also make sure that onedrive is not syncing your folders in there, i.e. uninstall it).

Regarding driver, google DDU, uninstall gpu drivers completely with it, then get the latest from nvidia's website directly.

Try the pre September driver 516.94.

The September update has caused drama for lots of Nvidia users myself included.

If this works, I have to run on an old driver for all my games just so RD can work? That's insane!

It doesn't auto update, sorry I wasn't clear. I download the update when I get notifications

When I follow Nvidia's instructions for rolling back the driver, the roll back driver option is greyed out :/

When I tried going through my device manager, the roll back driver option was greyed out so I'm not even sure I can roll it back

Go to settings/apps and uninstall there as you would for a non Steam game.

Personally I use iobit uninstaller - https://www.iobit.com/en/advanceduninstaller.php
