Issue with autosaves and manual saves??
I’ve seen a few posts regarding this issue on the Steam discussion page and the RDR2 subreddit with not many fixes offered, but I’ll try my luck and see if a solution can be found here. I am having an issue with saves - the game boots up fine and I can load my Story mode save, but once loaded, I get a message asking to autosave, and the autosave fails and I have to disable autosave. I then try to manually save, which fails along with the message, “Save failed. Please ensure the system storage has free space and try again.”

My RDR2 saves are in my Documents folder on my C drive, while RDR2 itself is on my D drive (both SSDs, if that’s important). Both drives have over 150gb free, so this shouldn’t be a storage issue. I have tried verifying game file integrity, clearing the Steam download cache, completely reinstalling the game, disabling my firewall and antivirus, and setting the game file folders' read-only setting off, and nothing has worked.

I’ve been having a blast with RDR2 but this is a game-breaking bug that makes me want to ask for a refund. How can I play the game at all if I can’t save my progress?? Any help that can be offered is appreciated.

Are you running the vanilla game or modded. I found when I added mods to the game the game wouldn't auto save due to not enough storage space or even manual save. So before I started modding the game I backed up the clean install. And tried to auto save and manual save which both worked. So then I started to try by adding mods one by one to see if I could save and it didn't work same issue.

Then it got me thinking why don't I try to set both the rockstar file in documents and the game location on my SSD to by pass the window defender scans by adding those to excluded files when starting the game.

When I went back in with the modded version of the game I tried auto save and manual saves and it worked. My understanding that one or all of the mods I was using may have been scan as a potential virus.

Anyway good luck hope this works

Cheers.

Right click the Rockstar Games folder in Documents; uncheck Read-Only and click OK.

Then launch Steam by right click > Run As Admin; this way the R* Launcher + RDR2 runs this way as well.

Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection. Under Virus & threat protection settings, select Manage settings, and then under Exclusions, select Add or remove exclusions > Select User//Documents//RockStar Games// Red Dead Redemption 2. Then also add SteamLibrary//SteamApps//Common//Red Dead Redemption 2. Hope this helps!

Unless you have Defender configured poorly I don't see any need for that.

However it does help to add folders such as Steam and Steam Library to that exclusion listing to put a stop to Defender constantly scanning those files all the time, which ties up cpu, ram, disk usage

You also don't have to go to settings at all. You should have a Defender icon in notification bar, just click there.
