If you’re by yourself, it can be pretty lonely. There’s no text chat in this game, and almost no one uses the voice chat, so communication between players is next to non-existent.
Sadly, depending where you live, cheating can be a huge problem (on PC). You may find yourself spontaneously exploding, suddenly stuck inside a cage, or surrounded by legions of hostile NPCs you have no hope of defeating.
Fortunately, you can always join a new session and hope it’ll be cheater free.
This game is extremely grindy, especially when just starting. A lot of content is locked behind “gold bars,” and while gold can be earned through gameplay, it’s incredibly slow. Gold can also be purchased for real money.
Recently, Rockstar has announced that they will no longer be releasing any large updates for Red Dead Online. The RDO dev team has been moved onto other projects. While the game still has a lot of content for new players to experience, it’s unlikely any more substantial content will ever get added.
Honestly, for it’s current price (50% off) now’s a good time to see if it’s to your liking.
TLDR:
RDO can be a lot of fun, but it has poor player communication, a bad cheating problem, is extremely grindy (unless you buy gold), and has no new content on the horizon.
I hope this info helps.
Edit:
The full game, Red Dead Redemption 2, is currently 67% off, and it includes the full online mode as well.
Honestly, the single player campaign is incredible! While the community is divided on whether or not the Online mode is “worth it” virtually everyone agrees the single player story is one of the best games ever made.
I wish Rockstar would just host dedicated servers; it would certainly help minimize the cheating problem. @_@
Does RedM have text chat, or just voice chat?
