Single Player: Does the Timber Wolf even exist?
OK, click bait style title... I have actually seen some. I've killed several, and skinned nearly as many. But I never actually studied any, and this is the one and only animal stopping me getting the Zoologist achievement.

I've spent hours now running all over the map to places the console players assure other players they've seen Timber Wolves, but nothing... Not even Gray Wolves most of the time.

Any suggested locations? Do Timber Wolves even have a dedicated area, or are they just a rare spawn alternative to the normal ones?

Try using your binoculus and eagle eye camp at night at night.

Spent over an hour real time there spinning around and zooming in on anything that moved... Not even a gray wolf.

When you use your eagle eye note the amount steamy wavy lines coming off you , thats your smell next time your in town take a bath head for the hotel. :)
speak to the hotel owner for bath services costs around $0.25.

Timber Wolves spawn up around Strawberry in my game. Whenever I'm up there, I get jumped by packs of wolves.

I've noticed that I haven't studied wolves either, but that's because they always spot me first, let out a howl and then swarm my horse. There's barely enough time to defend myself, let alone pull out binoculars to "study" them.

I'm really not sure how you'd do that, but I'm guessing moving slowly and quietly, and using cover scent would be good advice?

Does that actually change whether they spawn or not? I assumed it would only effect how soon they notice you... I'll give it a try anyway.

I'll combine that with the above and have a bath in Strawberry then :)

Let them see you, and run immediately towards a low building or rock you can jump onto. Turns out wolves can't get you even on a rock that's just barely above their mouth height. I was standing on one not much higher than Johns knees yesterday playing with how to get the interaction prompt up, and the gray wolves couldn't get me.
From there, throw a regular throwing knife at their butt area to injure them, and the prompt appears... I suspect you'd then be able to study an unstudied one.
Same trick works with the grizzly bear too, though I think the rock might need to be a bit bigger. The one I was on was about the same size as the bear itself.

Bathed, cover scent, dropped predator bait... Still just getting gray wolves. Tried 3 times at the spot most Youtube videos show, and again at a place I've been attacked multiple times (near the bridge you blow up late in the game).

I'm going to just give up now. Not worth my time.
