When we played RDR1, we were left wondering what happened what the gang was like before they disbanded. We got that answer in RDR2.
After RDR2, we are left wondering about the Blackwater incident. What really actually happened. Not just through the different hearsay accounts from the gang. Mac Callander's story would likely cover the origins of the gang up to the Blackwater incident.
If Mac Callander is indeed the main character in RDR3, it makes me question once he dies in his story, who would we play as after him if there is an epilogue?

You idea would be stupid. Jack's story is pointless. The wild west and outlaw lifestyle is practically over at that point when you take over as him.
Another prequel is necessary, and RDR3 has the story recipe with the Callander boys among other mentioned deceased gang members that didn't make it after the Blackwater incident.
The fact that Jack seems to be trying to step into his father's shoes with the wild west lifestyle over could make an interesting story in and of itself, the transition from that to what we can consider "modern" society, what that means, the idea of leaving the past in the past, behind you, the pointlessness of vengeance, etc. Not sure how that would play out, but I'm not a game dev. But as I said, I'd rather we not focus on the gang at all anymore.
Cuz another prequel... *Is* it necessary? How far back are we gonna go here? What more do we need to know about the Blackwater incident that we don't already know? ♥♥♥♥ got ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and it started Dutch down his path of darkness (or possibly is a sign that he was already going down that path). I think it works out better as a "mythology" piece, where we don't know exactly what went down, and we never will. Not everything needs to be penned out down to the very finest details. Sometimes it's better to leave things more of a mystery.
*If* there's an RDR3, I think it would be better to have it as more of a "in the same universe, different story and characters" type deal. Maybe hear mention of the Gang here and there as a fun little easter egg or something.
I believe they would find another way to tell that story if they wanted. But not with Callander.
What makes you think that? Listen to both the missions & camp conversations that make references to Mac. They make him sound like Arthur and John. "Neutral" is the best way to put it. The player fills in whether they are a good or bad guy through their gameplay. And if you paid attention to what Bill said about Mac, he said that Mac was a heartless person, but he had a heart. Again, this can be compared to both protagonist in Rdr1 and Rdr2, the player determines through their choices and gameplay if they are good or bad.
Also, Mac gave both his horse and coat to Arthur during the Blackwater massacre so that Arthur could escape. Look at how Arthur assisted John with escaping in the end of rdr2. It's very similar to that. The writing is on the wall that another prequel could be made and all the subtle references point to Mac being the main character. We will get to see the brotherhood bond between Davey and Mac, leading up to the formation of the gang itself, and up to the Blackwater massacre.
