holy crap im so over whelmed and i only just reached valentine after a week of play. anyone know a good beginners guide?

Ok i dont know which missions are story or side missions? I know up to a certain point i need to do missions to unlock upgrades but what else do you do exactly? go hunting?

Don't get too big of a bounty you can't pay off. The best way to gain honor is to greet people in populated areas, you can only greet a person or group of people once. The best way to get money is to do story missions but don't rush through them to quickly because Pearson cannot craft anything in chapter 5. Also, if you want extra money you can sell valuable items to a fence for lots of money. There is a fence in Rhodes, Van Horn, Emerald ranch, and Saint Denis. The more you use a weapon the more effective Arthur will be with it. You can get very rare horses in some locations on the map. On my second play though I got myself a White Arabian for free when normally a similar horse would cost almost $1,000 in the Saint Denis shop. You can find the White Arabian Northwest of lake Isabella which is North of Strawberry. You will need to bring winter clothing because the journey to the horse takes a long time and you will have to ride through snow. The Arabian is also very hard to catch but I'm pretty sure the game will walk you through how to tame it, just to be safe though make a save before you try to tame it. A very high paying mission sees you walking out of it with $2,500 or so dollars. The mission is in chapter 3 and it is called "Sodom? Back to gomorrah". After you complete this mission I recommend upgrading Arthur's tent until you get his map which allows you to fast travel to any town/important location. To fast travel you can go to his map or set up camp and press space to fast travel. But most importantly, have fun!

Yellow Map Markers are Story Missions
White Map Markers are Stranger Encounters/Missions (some only show up when you 'Find them').

Alot of guides to crafting skip over how to unlock the first steps which are from strauss missions i guess to unlock the ledger?

i unlocked the ledger but the leatherworking tools are not there. Just ammo and medic.

You shouldn't need a guide really. Just explore and talk to important characters. Pay attention to the Map and Mini-Radar-Map as well.

It should be obvious what is a side-quest vs main story mission.
Mission starters found in your main Camp though are basically required to move along the game in any ways. Start with whatever Strauss, Pearson and Hosea have to offer. Once you are introduced to the Fence trade character you'll be able to actually progress in an open-world sense outside of a main story stuff.

yeah my ledger has three pages, and only the medical tent, arths ammo and horse station are visible for purchase.

So yeah like the video shows the leatherworking tools are on the page there, but for some reason i cant select items on the right hand page, only the items on the left page seem to be selectable?

Check you need to use the ARROW KEYS which is not explained in game. Damn
