And a very good interactive map with markers for all important locations/collectibles . . . . . .

That should give you a good start, good luck, it's a great game, enjoy!
Above resources = Good
Less Story = More Game
You're now somewhere between 250-500 hours to the credits.
Slow Down
It's not a race.
Chapter 1 - The Tutorial
Chapter 2 - The Game Starts
Endure Chapter 1, learn some things, run everywhere to build your Stamina.
Chapter 2 - ignore Dutch, do what you want (you WANT to upgrade that satchel). Find some Gold, upgrade Pearson with some tools, start killing and donating perfect pelts, upgrade the camp, get a horse brush.
Ive done a handful of missions from horseshoe nothing great. A barfight, Drinking at the bar actually too. And i raided some o driscoll place with my buddy MARSTON for a double barreled shotgun.
But im still a virgin to the mysteries of crafting.
...and missed a Free Tomahawk (you're really going to wish you had shortly).
You need to do ONE Stauss Mission to unlock the ledger.
When that's done you buy upgrades for Pearson (and the camp) from the ledger. You can use cash, or Gold.
You WANT to be making regular and separate Manual Saves OFTEN. In case you have to back up a little (and get a Tomahawk, or something).
Crafting at the Campfire(s) trickles in as you meet people in the world (not everyone needs to be killed and looted). Some Recipe Pamphlets are 'in the world' and can be picked up (reading them gives you that crafting skill). Some are available for purchase at a Fence (the one in Rhodes is open right now).
There's a lot to do.
Take your time.
You CAN play this game without YouTube Hints.
If that's the path you choose - change that 500 hours to the credits to 1000 - unless you just want to 'Ride The Story' to the end (not recommended).
Strauss huh? I dont know if i did that one yet damnit.
If you did, the 'Ledger', next to the 'Donation Box' at Dutch's Tent should be available - approach it - open it - shove some money or Gold at it. Pearson needs some leather working tools - right now.
Stop playing Story Missions in Chapter 2 - until you have everything done in camp and for your satchel and have all the Challenges done that you can do in Chapter 2.
If you go into Chapter 3 with a punch list of 200 things you still have to do.... you'll wish you spent more time on YOU in Chapter 2.
Chapters 3 through 6 leave little time for laid-back activity. Chapter 2 is designed to be centrally located and laid back so you can get YOU Stuff done.
Sell the Gold and Jewelry to the Fence to turn it into Cash.
