Autosave wtf?
I just bought the game. I have only one game save. When I launch the game, I get three subsequent screens warning me and asking me if I want to erase my previous save, and that autosave might disable. I have only one game, what the ♥♥♥♥, how about you just let me continue where I left without bothering me? What the ♥♥♥♥ is this?

It's the system the game uses. You can manual save (when not in a mission) and/or use the auto-save system which can be turned on/off in settings. *escape key and "story" to manual save. I use both systems.

No, I mean that I start my one and only game, and after walking a few steps the game tells me, out of the blue, that I must choose to erase my current progress or not. Or is that what you meant by autosave? the game just interrupts your ass with 3 confirmation screens everytime it fancies a save? Even when doing nothing and 3 seconds after loading a save?

Yes, but it is not too often.

You can turn this off .. it is a buzz kill what I do is save often in different slots then after playing and saving awhile I will then overwrite a save best thing is to have a list of saves say 10 of them ... and then overwrite the BOTTOM save .... because this save was done a long time ago ... in play time ... when you overwrite a save it puts this new ... latest save at the top of the saves ... so the top save is your most recent save if you leave the game without saving for example and you come back in it automatically loads the save at the top of the list ...

for example save before you do any mission so if you mess something up you can reload ...

Unless you delete the auto-save before you exit the game; the next game launch and start story mode will generally always use the auto-save as what to load up.

I just ensure to manually save often when possible; then when I exit the game, I go and delete the auto-save file. You can delete it in-game before exiting as well. I'm just used to dealing with loose files. Since I'm often testing different GPUs and settings, I have to go to where the saved game file are anyways to delete the GPU cache.

it's a thoughtful developer concerned about your save wants and desires, it's rock stars way of saying "we love you , you and your game progress is important to us"
i for one am grateful for rock stars expression of game save love and care, i like to think of it as enjoying a refreshing cup of english mint tea whilst being wrapped in a warm blanket sitting in front of a crackling fire on a frosty winters evening , a cat sitting on my lap a dog by the fireplace and the Son's of the Pioneers playing on the Victrola,
i wish i would have gotten the chestnut dlc

I never delete my Autosave file - or turn Autosave off. I just manually save before I exit and that's where I start. Autosave may kick in on every game exit, not sure, but where ever I am when I manually save and exit is where I start.

Have we determined if One Drive is 'causing any of this? Are we not cloud saving, or are we cloud saving? I never get the OP's Message about my progress. I don't rely on Autosave, but it also doesn't seem to take over my game.

Something's going on here, but I don't have a clue what.

Saving has been perfected in the early 00s but developers keep screwing with it. I hate games which have check points instead of proper saving.

I just got suddenly attacked by a bear out of nowhere and in the middle of it the game is asking me if I want to auto save. WTF?

Does disabling autosaves disable mission checkpoints? I don't really feel that I need the autosave feature when I am just roaming but on the few occasions when I die during a mission, I like to load to a checkpoint and wouldn't want to accidentally disable those.

You need to manually save, but you don't need to disable autosave. Just don't rely on it.

The first time your horse is killed and you don't have a save to get back to this will become immediately apparent. Sometimes autosave can save the day. Sometimes it ruins the day. It's good to have it as a Hail Mary - but when Mary craps down your leg - good thing you have that manual save to get back to.

I don't think Autosave has anything to do with Checkpoints in Story Missions, but there is no good reason to disable it.

Autosave only happen AFTER something happens; could be good or bad. But it never autosaves just before something is about to happen. So think about that for a moment. BTW the game does NOT use any check point systems what so ever. That is ONLY during certain missions.

I save often, that is key. Sometimes even saving to a new slot because I'm not exactly sure if I want to over-write my previous manual save with what I just did or am about to do moving forward.

In Single Player games it has always been a thing where, you as the player should save often, that's a natural part of the game mechanic. You thinking you can go long periods without saving is rather foolish and you're just setting yourself up for frustrations. Because when you fail something you can't do over, well we know how that feels. Also you have to consider the fact that regardless of how good your machine is, how well you've configured it, etc. Any Game could crash at any time for any reason. Not saving and then having the power go out or having the game crash and losing a couple hours worth of gameplay can be a huge deal. I've gotten frustrated in the past for not saving as often as I should have, then a turn of events happens and I go through it, with sometimes hours going by, all to end up with results I'm not happy with, but had the power to have a different outcome. That's on me for not saving along the way. And then I get frustrated at the game and toss it aside for quite a while before going back to it. Don't do that to yourself.

Save before you exit the game also.

Here's my 'process':

I save every 15 minutes - or when I can't remember when the last save was. That's my Running Save.

I save to a New Slot before a Story Mission - do the Mission - then save to the Running Slot after and continue on to the next regular save every 15 minutes or so. When I run out of Before Story Slots I start overwriting them from the bottom. Probably safe by then.

Autosave is it's own slot. I keep it doing it's thing, just in case, but do not rely on it.

Killed my horse once a long time ago.
Autosave screwed me - I restarted the game.
I was in Chapter 3.

Never again...

;)

Yes never rely at all on the autosave.
The last 3 Tomb Raider games work the same way. Every time you find some "item" or make what the game considers as "progress" it updates the auto-save. But again, never rely on that. You saving often means you can go back slightly in time before you died or made a mistake. The autosave saves AFTER you've already died or made the mistake.

The first time I played RDR2 was shortly after launch on PS4. I did the first things the story has you do in Valentine, and go back to Camp. Then I was done with that mission or side-quest; whatever... I go back to Valentine on horse-back and mess around. Then I thought, oh cool let me jump on the train and see what goodies it has; LOL. Ok so long story short I'm onboard the train heading east. Stupid horse continues to follow me to no end. Then the train enters the tunnel. The horse got into the tunnel but then gets clipped by the train and dies. I was literally yelling at the game; WTF; HOW!? OMFG!

I forgot to save; yes it autosaved, with my horse dead already.
So I had to back-track with my manual save, before I did the story quest trip to Valentine.

*sigh*

From that moment on; hmm yea F that autosave slot.
