who designed these controls?
played first 30 minutes and the controls are obnoxious.

hold button for 3 seconds to pick something up and activate an object. whos idea was this? every can of beans i want to pick up takes me 3 secs of waiting for the glue to dry.

hold right mouse button to see dialogue options and press f or r to select your dialogue option while holding w to drive your horse? lol is this starcraft 2? why i need 45 apm to play this game?

press a different button to activate things. usually games have one dedicated button to activate and i put my sight on what i want to activate. cyberpunk did much better where all options were put in a line and you cycle through the options. this game gives each option its own button to press so i feel like im in a courtroom reporter.

ok tell me, is there really no quick save button at all? i googled it and what i found said no. i could not find anything in game. it is forgivable for a devs to not know that f5 is THE quick save button but to not have one at all is a sin against humanity.

Rebind keys if it'll make it easier - after you find them all - and then master their use.

Took me about 50 hours, but it was time well spent.

Manually save often (esc/story/save - long press esc to get back).
Manually save before Story Missions - there's no saving in the missions, but you do have a checkpoint system (L).
Autosave is NOT your friend.

The controls are what they are. There are no shortcuts to muscle memory.
If you can't take it - play something else.
If you like the game - do the work.
It's worth it in the end (to me anyway).

The save system is what it is as well.
Deal with it - or don't.
Totally up to you.

This game simply isn't like other games - it's 1000 times better.
Do the work.

don't listen to that guy above, totally agree they should've not hired the control designer, game really sucks

You're not fooling anyone - you love this game - and you mastered the controls some time ago, just like I did.

:D

ok so there isnt a quick save button at all. that is just amazing at this point in gaming development. and the autosave isnt even robust or encompassing. manual long saving only is like 1990 prince of persia commander keen. cmon blizz step it up.

50 hrs to rebind and master their use? im sure you can finish the entire story in 50 hrs. im not sure what you mean by this... lol

You might be able to finish Story Missions and watch the credits in 50 hours. Maybe.

You'll miss 90% of the game.

If all you want is Story Missions - refund the game and watch it on Youtube. You won't even need to play it or learn the controls.

Note:
I doubt you can even watch the game on YouTube in 50 hours considering the million hours I've watched YouTube discovering how to play it.

If you’re having trouble with mouse and keyboard controls you can try plugging in a console controller (xBox or PS5).

Don’t worry if you’re not used to aiming with dual joysticks, controller users get an aim-assist which is basically auto-aim. XD
(Upon aiming you immediately lock-on to a target’s centre of mass, just tilt the joystick up a little for a head shot.)

I also found the keyboard controls very clunky. Switching to a PS5 controller made the game a lot more enjoyable for me. :)

Love your rant, and completely agree.

I figure it was some sort of drunken troll, or completely stoned dev....

... it had to be someone with incredibly slow reflexes, cuz it's simply stupid.

Yep, they went into detail and made horses deficate, but couldnt add a simple f5 quicksave.

Controls are huge regression compared to RDR 1. If you haven't played it (and I strongly recommend to do so) you will be surprised how much better RDR 1 was in many aspects. No tar pit walking, no hours of pointless button holding, no clumsy weapons management, everything was fast and responsive. Not perfect, but way more pleasant. In RDR 2 Rockstar overdid and overthought a lot of game aspects and instead of better immersion we got irritating, clumsy character control and movement interleaved with completely obliterating every door in his way :)

My advice is - be patient, game is worth it. And yes, you will die many times because of those controls. They just suck. Both on keyboard and gamepad. UX guy got stoned. Sorry.

I’m just starting out, chapter 2, and after bumping into a pedestrian in town I meant to “defuse” but instead drew me gun. And about a second later everyone was shouting at me. Lol

Another time I was on the horse and meant to “greet” another rider. Instead I accidentally jumped onto his horse and knocked him to the ground. It’s chaos. It’ll get better, but it’s . . . different.

Game is lots of fun still, though.

Rebinding keys that make more sense to you will really help.
The earlier you start the sooner you'll get used to them.

I never could get used to WSAD - I play on the Arrows and Numberpad side.
I rebound the keys I used most as I found them - now it's automatic, fast and efficient.
It takes a while.

Believe it or not, some people can't use a controller - and some don't want to even if they could.

Didn't need luck. Some time was all I needed.

You didn't even try - your controller with a built in Aim-Bot was as far as you got.

who cares of aimbot on rockstar third person game, you can even play multiplayer with it. this is not doom eternal.

If you can't use a controller - you care.
You can - and use that Aimbot with every kill.
Otherwise you couldn't hit a barn - even if it was standing still.
