Follow NPC on horse

So i have problems following a NPC by horse. The standard key is holding Left-Shift i think which should follow an NPC when riding to a certain location without having to "steer" left or right. Sometimes it works and Arthur is riding side by side with the NPC.
But sometimes it does not work and suddenly Arthur just rides into another direction as the NPC. Is there a trick how to follow a NPC?

Hold v to toggle on cinematic camera and then you don't have to do anything to ride.

Yes that is what i currently do, sometimes i just want to ride alongside my buddies using the normal camera and want to know what i am doing wrong :)
