Somehow he enticed a predator into Shady Belle (I can only assume an alligator). First I know of it is when all the horses flee and something lands on the fire in a mass of flames and sparks setting Arthur's left leg alight in the process.
Seems he chose death by fire rather than fang.
Alas poor Spot, he cooked up well.
