what is the point of the mask?

when i use it and commit crimes i stil lget a bounty and NPCs still know its me when i go in towns.

From what I understand, cops can see through the mask 100% of the time, it only works on civilans, you need to either make sure they never turn you in or avoid being seen by the cops once you've been turned in for the mask to work.

I've also heard that if you wear the same clothes and/or ride the same horse around NPCS you've already committed crimes before, they will knows its you even with the mask since they will recognize your clothes/horse. But idk if that's true or just a rumor.

It gives rooks a reason to complain about the mask not working when lawmen see you.

Lawmen know who you are - mask or no mask.
If you don't change clothes since the last crime - everybody knows who you are. Put the mask on the horse. It'll do about as much good.

Mask is useful when committing crimes in towns or on roads, i always wear it before stealing

But , you must run away immediately after your theft. Staying around for too long or shooting lawmen will get you a bounty.

Been doing some Bandit challenges on list and didn't get bounties most the time with mask

Untrue, it's just what people thought before figuring out how the mask really works. Wearing a mask around civilians, they will never recognize you even if you've kept the same clothes/horse since the begining... But cops are all mighty and will always recognize you. People were just confused and came up with this clothes/horse ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ because the game was still new and they were so impressed by it they thought the game had more complex systems than it really had - before realizing it was only a matter of if cops saw them, but when people use google the problem is they find all those old threads/guides that said wrong things and keep spreading the infos even when it's wrong.

well i use mask when i rob/kill NPCs i find on the roads and i still accumulate bounty and also I can never get some withnesses to stop unless i kill them. specifically stagecoaches. the people inside them will just keep running
