How to start hunting? I'm severely overthinking it and need help!
Disclaimer: I don't need any hunting tips or advice as I've already researched for hours and took plenty of notes on hunting so that's not what this post is about...

The problem I'm facing as I begin my journey of RDR2 is ridiculous...what do I go hunt first lol? and how often should I hunt? This game gives you so much freedom and I'm a little overwhelmed I know it's stupid of me but it's just how my brain works...how do you guys go about hunting while playing through story missions and side quests?

1) Less Story = More Game
2) Upgrade Pearson so he can start working on your Satchel.
3) Hunt everything Pearson Needs and don't stop until that Satchel is done.
4) buy Varmint Rifle and Springfield Rifle - Tools of the Trade.
5) that repeater is useless.
6) The camp needs meat - every day - all day.

By the time you get The Satchel done and the Camp Upgraded Fully you'll know a LOT more than you do now. <---you'll need some treasure - luckily there's plenty near you at Horseshoe.

Agreed Satchel upgrade should be first focus, as well as a few camp upgrades to unlock fast travel etc.

You should also keep a supply of food on you at all times. Hunting bigger animals gives you better/bigger steaks, that if you season with different herbs, you get a boost to one of the three stats, Stamina, Health and Dead Eye.

Then there is the hunting flyers and getting the perfect carcasses for taxidermist.

I'm in act three and I haven't finished the satchel yet and I have too much storage! I found a MOD that limits carry/weight and that helps. *shrug*

There are a couple of guys you'll meet - both dealing with plants. The first guy will be very near Horseshoe and will tell you the wonders of Indian Tobacco.

Before you meet him, listen for the Cougar - investigate - get a good headshot with the Springfield or Bow and cart that rascal's 3 Star hide back to Pearson. That one's a 'Gift'. The others will be harder to attain...lol <---I have the info you need for Cougars - just ask.

Then in your travels - hunting for Pearson - you'll meet another guy. He wants plants (obviously, you want to pick everything you find - Eagle Eye is Dead Eye without aiming - you can see all plants easily especially at night) and will tell you how to craft
some things. <---don't steal his horse by accident (it was standing right there - I thought it was mine, I swear)... he really freaks out...lol He'll be near the Old Blind Man in the Heartlands - I think. Then you will find him out and about.

Defend yourself if attacked by the O'driscolls (you will be attacked by the O'driscolls), they seem tough at first, but later you'll abuse them mightily and they won't be able to hurt you - much. You're hunting animals right now - not men - unless you have no choice.

Sprint everywhere! Hold the run key down and don't stop until you're out of gas. You need to build Stamina Stats - so you can pull that bow string. The Bow is your most powerful weapon - even after you get better weapons. Use it.

Don't get rid of your Cattleman. Upgrade it and use it. It's one of the best Sidearms in the game. There are probably 100 free ones just laying around the map - if you need another for some reason. Pull just one, so you have a free hand - and it's got the fire rate of a machine gun as you 'Fan The Hammer' - and reloads in the blink of an eye.

Your Cattleman is the ONLY weapon that you can acquire special grips for based on your honor level:

Hero Grips: Honor Plus Level 4
Bandit/Outlaw Grips: Honor Negative Level 4 <---Ebony, of course.

Yes...
Unfortunately Automark isn't.
Endure - it gets better - when it changes to Manual.
(In Chapter 2's 'Pouring Forth Oil' - what seems like an eternity)

Not early on in the game it isn't, Dead eye's auto lock is your enemy!
Not exactly sure what triggers it's manual mode,
but it sure isn't advancing the story as many seem to think..

I have a crap ton of saves with manual mode lock enabled, during chapter II..
No mod's or trainers used in any...

EDIT: should also mention the stranger mission "Fisher of fish"
Have many saves during chapter II where Arthur has met Jeremy Gill and has the legendary fish map...
Not what triggers manual lock, just another one of those things you'll often hear
"That happens in chapter __" Winner is, Chapter II with that one too..

I hear ya, game really needs a survival mode..
Often regret completing the satchel for that very reason..

But I'll give ya a hint:
go to the chapter III campsite (any time, day one of free roam if you like)
Follow the dock as if walking the plank, keep going straight..

Little green 4 legged critter of interest on that Island dead ahead..
Give that horse a nice shot of stamina before jumping in, its a long swim..
Or paddle, I just take a horse across, quicker than finding something to paddle..
JuiceWSA Jul 11, 2022 @ 4:05am
It's an easy swim for the horse from what looks like the shortest distance (Northmost Island). A strong, fully bonded horse can make it without help - but yea - have some help aboard in case.

There's also a PC Exclusive Trinket over there. Don't forget to pick that up and the place is loaded with Burdock Root.

Autolock is my arch enemy. Manual Dead Eye occurs in 'Pouring Forth Oil' (Edit: C-2), but it's been so many playthroughs since the first Non-Modded one I really don't recall what happens before then.

This helps explain it:
https://reddead.fandom.com/wiki/Dead_Eye_Targeting

I run Dead Eye Master 1.5 and Veto Automark entirely. Stupid mechanic, IMO. Developers must think it's funny to shoot horses or mark a deadly predator 26 times (none of which would be fatal on it's own - ears, paws, tail tip, a-hole, leg, etc) so you can use your Evans to hunt with. I don't share that opinion - so OUT it goes. Problem solved.

My FIRST Dead Eye Shot is manual and right between the eyes. One Shot. Dead. No Drama.

#4 why the springfield rifle and not the bolt action one?
#5 Why is repeater useless?
#6 Needs meat, every day - really - I've gone days without taking meat to the camp, lazy buggers can go hunting if they want food. What benefit getting meat for the camp give you?

Which MOD is that that limits the carry/weight? sounds useful for my "survival play through".

best experience of any open world game is the noob experience. You will only get that feeling once.

That being said, don't overthink it. Hunt when you hungry. You got your health/stamina/deadeye pools which will gradually drop if you ignore it.

The best way to play this game is like how you would do Fallout 4. Pick a random direction and head out . . .

#4 - Bolt Action Express Rounds like to bounce off Massive Animal Heads. Just like the Carcano. Rolling Block/Springfield drop 'em where they stood.

#5 - a Repeater kills one Breed Clean and only in Story - a wild dog - Fox, Coyote. You need a Rifle Online.

#6 - Arthur is the Camp Manager. Manage. If you don't return to camp every 3 days you take an honor hit for not doing your job. I keep Camp Icons in the Gold. I do my job. Check the Ledger. They do hunt for themselves, but I'm not sure how tasty that Bat Wing Stew is. My camp is well fed with fresh meat every day (or two - barring Gambler 8 interference).

Apparently you don't do a lot of hunting - or get many perfect pelts.

You're welcome to play it your way.
I like my way better.

A little Online Hunting Story as we sit around the fire...:

Great Plains - I'm coming back from Thieves Landing and here's a 'Question Mark' on my map. I hear what must be The Legendary Hog in the brambles squealing and carrying on a fool, but I can't see him. I aim the horse that way - thinking it would just go out the back and I'd blast it.

The horse threw me, the hog ate me.

Ok... fair enough. I spawn back in run down there and jump on that big rock. The Hog is out after me, but runs when It can't eat me again. I can't lock on with Dead Eye, and my Repeating Shotgun is almost useless at free aim so off goes the Hog and gone.

Fast Travel to Tumbleweed. Purchase and Customize the Auto Shotty. <---when I pull the trigger I want a hunk of lead going in that thing right then, not two clicks later.

Where are you, you smelly, squawkin' beoch?

Haven't see him yet, but I'm ready.
I think.

:D
