Metal Detector not working
I figure the title mostly explains it. The metal detector isn't working, and no dig sites show up. All I can find is tarot cards, bottles and generic herbs, but not flowers (plants, not wildflowers) I unloaded the game twice and reloaded it with no change. I completely removed every vestige of the game from my computer, loaded it all back up, and no change. Rocket Support is no help, they gave me this huge list of things to do, I did it all, and still no change. Has anyone had this happen and how did you fix it? I expected that with removing it from the computer completely and add it back would solve the issues, but it didn't.

After an update (usually) Collector will be broken. Here's the fix:

Nope, didn't work. I am thinking I will need to delete everything and repurchase. I hope I can keep the cloud save to keep my data. I would hate to have to start from the beginning again

If you have it, uninstall OneDrive. Then try deleting that file again. Or even better, rename whole rockstar games folder in documents. When you launch game again you will be prompted to enable cloud saves. DO NOT enable them for now.
back-up single player save game,

launch rockstar launcher app, go to settings and delete local profile information, then exit app.

delete game profile settings and saves, in your (Red dead) rockstar games folder, in documents.

step 3 search in task bar for %appdata%, then open local file, press T, to find TEMP folder quick, delete stored cloud(long numbers and letters here in name ).dat files, really don't want to go over how many bugs that can or what can cause more issues if their corrupted.

make sure to click on folder and un-hide hidden files if you can't find them.

Don't be scared of deleting a lot of cloud files in the Temp folder, best to just hold shift and press down key until it scrolls down to the bottom, then let go and press delete key, don't worry about debug files they can't be deleted unless you use command prompt override delete commands to the file location, and simply don't use command prompt to do that, just to prevent human error's.

just skip delete debug files, when asked.

Restart steam, and make sure you exited it before doing the above,

start rockstar app sign in, launch game and do not sync files from cloud at this time, then go to online, you should be good, you can delete all the files on the game in documents, but if you have a good XML file don't delete it.

Turn sync back on after you played for a few hours then replace your single player save game if they did not get replaced after cloud saves were enabled.

Your online game character on Rock-star's master servers, you will not lose any progress or have to repurchase anything as long as your the valid owner of the account.

OneDrive will F up your Games, get rid of that non-sense.
Or at least configure it to never backup your Documents folder + sub-folders.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

I do all what juice said and what I written, I always have one-drive disabled and only manually upload files, I learned years ago how to use command prompt to fix windows installation so if my system goes down it will be due to bad master hard drive or fried motherboard, or even something as simple as CMOS 3v battery.

when I did what juice stated I stilled had issues, figured out the deleting of temp cloud files helped because my maps would not work either along with the metal detector unless I did a cleaning when ever I sold a lot of collectibles or we got these micro-updates, the compiled dates of the files along with stored information that's basically a yellow slip file copy for the user, of the actions accomplished seemed to cause an issue with the games effects on the detector, after being stored for so long.

so I just made a guess, after I sold the items and when it stopped working to find a solution to what made maps and metal detector stop working.

I know that. But if you use OneDrive and have to setup to do backup/restore; it might fetch the file from Cloud and put back into your folder if deleted.

One Drive's Automatic Backup/Restore has been banned from this establishment - for LIFE.

I guess that's why it's so easy at my house.
I do my own backing up - or rather trust R* to do it - when I restore from 'The Cloud' - it's their cloud, not mine.

When I delete Player, and restart the game, R* asks me if I'd like a copy of their Player and that's the point - MINE IS BROKEN IN THE COLLECTOR ROLE - SO YES!

Works every time.

Apparently (and this is a wild ass guess) when the game updates, R* updates their copy of Player, but not mine - hence being busted until I get a copy of theirs.

Annoying?
Yes.
Easy Workaround?
Yes.

I never enable Cloud Backups; R* does not use this for anything related to your Online Character. This gets redownloaded automatically.

R* cloud backup is only for Story Mode Saves.

The Player file is a "cache" file. For whatever reason needs to be deleted after each R* RDO Update, which is an Online Service-side Update. The player file stored locally gets damaged or invalidated in some form or another. Obviously not as a whole otherwise the game would throw an error or the entire file would get redownloaded should such a thing happen. Anyways, when you play a game, you should keep up to date about it when its an Online game specifically. This doesn't generally happen through Steam, the R* Forums for the most part. R* is lazy in such ways unless its a more major update. This is obviously true if you ever played GTAV-Online, the game updates and makes various Online changes all the time, but unless its a more feature packed or otherwise major update, we don't ever hear much about them from R* directly. Instead we have to to rely on YouTube folks who invest their time in checking out each game update and making a list and video notes of such changes to share with viewers/players.

For RDR2 updates I pretty much have to rely on this guy...
https://www.youtube.com/c/HazardousHDTV
When I see RDO has updated, I delete my "player" file in the WinOS Documents structure before launching RDR2 the next time so I don't get into RDO and then find out Metal Detector does not work (which breaks after each RDO update) and then I'm forced to restart the game if I wish to do anything for Collector role. Your player file is downloaded fresh again when missing. Again it is a caching file for all of the Online Content. This is why the RDO portion of the RDR2 Main Menu system is generic like a clean install of the game when you delete that file. Once you re-enter RDO again all of that data gets downloaded to a fresh "player" file. Your actual Player Progress is saved all on R* end, but again has nothing to do with Cloud Sync Backups; as it doesn't use that for RDO at all.

It's just stuff you get used to. Plenty of games out there have little quirks like this.

Still having this issue, I have OneDrive disabled/not active already, I tried deleting the player files as well as removing all of the files in the settings folder; none of this had worked or solved my issue.

My Metal Dector & Shovel is still not working or showing items despite it being accurate.

I am using the live map too for this: https://jeanropke.github.io/RDR2CollectorsMap/

I've ended up just making a ticket complaint to R* about dealing with this bug that makes the collector role unplayable as well as various other bugs like the moonshiner free roam missions where its stuck on "kill the remaining enemies" etc. Hopefully they fix these bugs soon because they're getting beyond a joke & have been going on for far too long. Idc or rly want "compensation" over it, I want them to actually FIX IT.

Do you have any Collector Maps in your Satchel that you can activate; that's the easiest and 100% true way to know for sure whether the metal detector is working or not because those maps and detector are tied together as part of Collector role.

All you need to delete are all files that begin with P
and the CloudSync file.

When asked to enable CloudSync after the R* Launcher goes to load up again, click NO.

There is nothing in the Settings folder that is tied to this. All that gets put in there is the Settings.XML file that holds the Graphics Settings and some misc files for GPU Cache that get created upon game launch (that long white loading bar)
